Rising Stars: Meet DeAriel Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeAriel Jackson.

Hi DeAriel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started slightly playing the piano/keyboard when I was around eight or nine. I could not play and was not good. I only knew about two to three songs. When I got a little older, maybe around 14 or 15, I started playing at my church. I did not know what I was doing, and in my eyes, I still could not play. But, it did force me to practice more and learn more material. Because I did not want to embarrass myself, I started learning songs each week to be prepared for church Sunday morning. This molded and shaped me into the musician I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has not been a smooth road by no means. When it came to being a musician, I struggled with my confidence and I always compared myself to others. Although I grew up around music, playing the piano was something different for me. I grew up singing, and I was always confident in my ability to sing. That is something I always knew I could do because my whole family sung.

When it came to playing, I struggled a lot, especially trying to teach myself. The lack of confidence was the main struggle, and I believe that set me back a few years. I was blessed to have family around that boosted my confidence and told me I could play when I really could not. That motivated me to practice more and become the musician I always desired and knew I could be.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently a senior in College, pursuing a career in Music Production. I am also the Minister of Music at my local church. I love music, and it is the one thing that can bring me peace. I am most proud of how far I have come as a musician. Looking back just a year ago, I can see my growth. That is what keeps me going. In the future, I’ll look back at this day and see the goals I set for myself and see them come to fruition. I will see even more growth than I see right now.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is of course family and taking care of myself. As a musician self-care has to be a priority in my life. If I can not take care of myself, I can not effectively be the musician and singer that I need to be. So it is important to take mental breaks and make myself a priority. Then I will be able to do the work refreshed and renewed.
