Rising Stars: Meet Dee Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Lewis.

Dee, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a child, all I wanted was the Barbie Heads or My Ponys that I could style their hair in some way. I knew that there was nothing else that I wanted to do with my life.

At 16 I was an assistant at my “aunt’s” Salon. We worked very long days, but I loved it until getting pregnant.

I started Cosmetology School and stopped at 21 due to lack of transportation. I kept getting stuck with no way home. (I lived deep in the country in SC at the time)

About 4 years later I went to Cosmetology school and graduated…coming out under apprenticeship.

Since then almost 20 years later, I’m still loving it. I’ve learned a lot, the most important things being building relationships, providing great customer service, and being strict about time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve had to learn hard lessons about juggling different personalities with my clients, how to service more than one person at a time when necessary, the necessity of being prepared for any client that comes through the door, and sometimes transportation issues getting to or from the salon. When you’re starting out or not really making a lot of money, it’s hard to balance household bills and salon expenses. I had a client leave to get more hair during her braiding appointment never to return. That was a hard blow, especially after 8 hours of providing her with a service.

Every day still isn’t “smooth”, but because of what I’ve experienced and learned along the way I handle things completely different now.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed Cosmetologist. I am proud that I conduct my business with integrity. Listening to my clients, providing excellent customer service, and taking their time into consideration at all times. I’m by no means perfect, but I work hard at it. I believe that I’m known for these things and making sure that my clients are satisfied. If for some reason, they aren’t, they have the freedom to express that, and I’ll correct it. I work primarily with ethnic hair. I pride myself in making the health of their hair my primary concern.

I love relaxing my client’s hair, but I also do silk presses as well on natural hair.

Any big plans?
My plan is to open up a salon of my own with my husband, keeping the same relaxing and peaceful atmosphere that I have now in my suite. A place where women can come and unwind leaving feeling refreshed inwardly and outwardly.

We all feel better when we’re taken care of inwardly. It reflects on the outside.

It’s a possibility that I may open up more than one salon. I’ve considered that as well.
