Today, we’d like to introduce you to Deran Wright.
Hi Deran, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am entirely a self-taught artist, and the first inclination is to say I’m a self-made man… but actually, I have had lots of help along the way. I engaged in two primary activities when I was a kid… drawing and reading. I always carried a sketchbook and drew constantly, and I got very good.
It was so good that mature artists began to notice, and they were invariably helpful with tips, advice, and encouragement. It was a famous artist, Kelly Pruitt, painter and sculptor, who gave me my first sculpting supplies, a block of ‘Victory Brown’ sculpting wax and a hardwood tool when I was 9. I wasn’t interested in sculpting at the time, but later, it became very interesting indeed.
Along the way, other older artists, gallery owners, and foundry owners seemed to take an interest, and I learned a great deal. I was a willing and eager student, and teachers appeared, for which I am very grateful.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think it’s possible for any artist or creative type to have a completely smooth road.
The arts are the original and the ultimate in what is now referred to as the ‘gig’ economy. Anyone with a career in the arts experiences ups and downs. There are times when an artist is swamped and can’t keep up with the work, and other times when there just is no work, and the money runs out.
What you do in these times is what defines you as an artist. It’s what keeps many talented people from attempting a career in the arts. It can be a life of constant uncertainty, not knowing for sure what’s coming ahead. But in my experience, there is no certainty in life for anyone.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
As of 2024, I have been a professional bronze sculptor for 45 years. In that time span, I have made many, many, works on commission. Bronze is not like other art forms.
The medium is so expensive that it takes multiple collaborators to create something of any size. By listening closely, taking in the client’s considerations, and then applying my own take to the subject, I have created many sculptures that I take great pride in and also pleased my clients. That’s almost like another art form.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Being approachable, listening carefully, and taking each project as a separate and unique opportunity to create something great.
