Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwill.
Hi Dwill, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Hello, my name Darius Williams but the city of Dallas knows me as Dwill or Dwill254. I am originally from Killeen Texas born and raised. The name Big Kat came from my early childhood in high school, “They use to call me Big Kat on the basketball team Read it and the “K” stands for Killeen my city so I decided to name my company Bigkat Promotions.
My first contract was with Nipsey Hussel but due to his passing, I never had the chance to have him as my first artist for my events. My first event for Big Kat Promotions originally started May 3, 2019, in Dallas, Texas. where I brought Yung Miami to Club AOD (Ace of Dallas) a strip club located in Dallas. At that time, it was only Careesha and no JT. I built a good friendship and business relationship with the owner of the club who also name is Dwill.
My first show with the city girls was a learning experience, and I took my first major loss. For someone who is inexperienced, I just went for it. But that did not stop me from doing more shows. I was determined to learn the loops of being a promoter. I started manifesting and of course, building myself a team.
Once I had my little team with close childhood friends and my fiancé Buda Jones, I began to start going for it and booking events and bringing entertainment to Dallas. What artist have I Brought to the city…. I’ve worked with the city girls, moneyman, toosii Mulatto, Alexis Sky, Stunna 4 Vegas, Clermont Twins, Black Youngsta, and a few more artists.
As a promoter it is my honor to help local music artists that are looking for big opportunities like these, I give them opportunity to perform at my events. I love seeing people’s careers grow and to know I played a part of it. “I like to work behind the scenes, I am not a flashy type of guy.”
I am currently working on a project bringing Da Baby a popular music artist to Garland, Texas a small city close to Dallas. Which is one of my major and first big shows that will hold up to more that 7,000 people.
For closing, I have big plans in the near future for Big Kat Promotions and expanding its brand. I am thankful and Blessed by God to have this opportunity and able to share and teach others. It takes hard work and consistency to walk in my shoes and handle shows. Thank you!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Learning how to take losses and learning from my own mistakes. Coming out of hard losses made my mind think wiser and smarter.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The work I do is not like any average club promoter. I deal with artists you see on Billboards. I get a chance to build a good relationship with them personally. I’m speaking to these artists and their managers directly. I am not going through middlemen.
What I’m most proud of is how far I come. I became consistent and driven to be better. I’m also most proud of the support I have from Dallas and my peers. What sets me apart from others is I like to expand my business characteristics. I want to connect with the whole world, in the future travel and do concerts overseas. I don’t judge Artist Or people, I believe in second chances. Being a black African Man with his own business and it is important that I try and give others the same opportunity that I wish someone gave me. Doesn’t matter white, black, gay, straight purple, or blue; there’s is opportunity for everyone.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice if you want to be a promoter and to not be afraid to put yourself out there. Also, to make sure you build you a team. Successful people have a team that helps build the brand. Another advice or to be open to learn from others; doing this business I built good friendships with other promoters in Dallas and collaborated with their projects. Working together is better than working by yourself. It expands the brand and gives more opportunities for you and your partner.
