Today we’d like to introduce you to Ed Hall.
Hi Ed, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After spending 15 years in an illustration/design position at Hallmark Cards, I needed to leave the corporate world. I had the desire to work for myself and transition into a full time abstract painter.
In those early years, I began exploring artists and their work to understand and develop my voice and visual style. My confidence emerged, and with that, I focused on defining my process of painting. Also, I realized that selling and marketing of art is important in building a solid foundation of moving forward. I worked with designers, galleries and social media, to help me establish building my brand.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the main challenges was developing a distinct visual identity. I had to separate myself from the crowd and stand out in a field full of wonderful, creative talent.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As an artist, it’s simple. I love what I do. Art is my passion and my freedom. I control my schedule, choose my projects, and build my own future.
Not everyday is great. Challenges will always occur; and when they do, I view them as valuable lessons in my growth. I value the time I spend on critiquing my daily results, as I learned from observing different stages of my work.
My minimalist paintings utilize surface texture and mark making to demonstrate a ‘less is more’ approach within color field compositions.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck does play an important role. Timing and availability often dictate artistic success. Talent matters, but luck creates the actual opportunity.
