Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Herrera.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began painting about nine years ago, though the path that led me here only makes sense in hindsight. I’ve always been a creative at heart — I studied Design at the University of North Texas and built a career in the design industry. But as I moved into management roles, creating less and overseeing more, I started to feel restless. Around the same time, my son was born, and I found myself searching for something that was entirely my own — a space to release my artistic energy and reconnect with my creative core.
I turned to painting, experimenting on canvas with trowels and brushes, exploring texture, layers, and movement. Over time, my style began to evolve, and so did my curiosity. One day, while walking through a jewelry store, I was captivated by the way light danced across colorful pieces displayed on clear acrylic blocks. That moment sparked a new direction for my work. I began painting on 3D acrylic shapes, discovering how color, transparency, and light could transform the viewer’s experience.
Today, my art continues to evolve — a reflection of my journey, my curiosity, and my love for creating something that feels both dynamic and deeply personal.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly the struggles in my life are what make my art worth it. Its hard to see them as obstacles. I still work full time but my art keeps me balanced. I have 2 kids with full schedules but my art gives me ways I can create with them. My husband is a huge support and is always there when I need to push through or need to trouble shoot an issue. My friends and family are beyond supportive. Everything that isn’t perfect in my life gives new meaning because I can channel that energy in a healthy way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My specialty and what I have become known for are my 3D acrylic shapes. I take these shapes and paint on one side of them. Each one different, each their own piece of art. From there my clients can just enjoy one or create an ensemble of shapes to fill a wall. They are 3″ deep so the light and refraction that is created makes the whole piece grow, reflect and move with you as you move within the space.
My art is full of energy and color. It compels you to interact with it and draws people in. There isn’t a deep meaning per say. Just positive fun energy that lights you up.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
To push through. Keep trying to find the thing that brings you joy. It doesn’t have to be good it just has to be good for you.
