Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Remington.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My first book is autobiographical. It’s about a lot of things I went through growing up and how I was able to grow and get myself out of it. So that one came kind of naturally. As I was able to be more open about mental health I decided to branch out and write my second novel “Submerged” It took a completely left turn from my original form of writing and I loved it. I found myself getting deeper into my creativity and allowing my thoughts and ideas spill onto paper. I’ve been writing ever since.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not smooth. I still work for a living 8-5 Monday to Friday. I have a new husband, 2 dogs, and a cat. I also work in the medical field so the second I wake up at 6:30 am to the second I lay down at night I’m taking care of other people. I love being a wife and a pet mom. I absolutely love my job as well. Balancing all 3 things is no joke and certainly changes your home life schedule. If I had a chance to focus on me for a moment, I’d squeeze in my writing whenever I could.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m certainly no specialist in anything but I’d like to say that I’m not afraid to discuss the difficult topics of mental health that everyone else is afraid to bring up. My writing is rooted in one core idea: we don’t escape our fears by avoiding them — we transform by facing them. Both of my books explore mental health in a very real, tangible way, using fiction as a bridge to conversations many people are afraid to have out loud.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Absolutely. My mom was always my rock growing up. She and I were able to share similar experiences due to my upbringing and I always had a safe space to discuss my fears and anxieties. I think that’s so important in today’s world where that support is lacking. No matter who your guardian or caretaker is, I feel like as long as you have safety and love as a priority, you should be able to express yourself freely and I really want to bring that idea to light. No matter what you believe in, how you think, or what your struggles are, everyone deserves to feel loved and safe.
