Rising Stars: Meet Emily Winnenberg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Winnenberg.

Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Over the last 8 years, I have grown a career of artistry that encompasses the duality of my interests: floral design and mural painting. My background in education is an English Lit degree, which I am very proud of, even if I don’t use it as often as I thought I would. Everything I know about murals, floral arranging, and even social media is the product of many years of mentorship and guidance from friends and coworkers, something for which I have a lot of gratitude. With a paintbrush in one hand and garden shears in the other, I hope to inspire other artists to push the boundaries of what they’re expected to offer in one tidy package as a creative.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel very fortunate to have such an incredible support system of friends and family around me, but my first year of business has absolutely come with challenges. The industries I represent (fine art, horticulture, weddings, etc.) are luxury expenses, and in this period of recession following Covid, people are (rightfully) scaling back on spending. I may land 1 out of 10 prospective clients, and those rejections are hard! I’m learning that as much as they sting, they are a part of the gig, and my time is too precious to waste being brought down. It is both empowering and terrifying to be a woman in business with no background in business management, and I’m grateful for all the women ahead of me who have lent a hand to help me up the ladder.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always found it a bit challenging to write a job description for myself because my creative brain has me constantly trying new things! Primarily, I paint murals and I arrange flowers. I’m known for bold graphic designs with bright colors and storybook landscapes. Occasionally, my signature wavy cactus makes an appearance in the foreground. I am most proud of the weddings I’ve arranged flowers for because they were truly a labor of love. To be asked to be a part of a lifelong friend’s wedding day was so special to me and something I’ll always cherish. I think what sets me apart from others is that I don’t limit myself to one niche. There’s a Camus quote that roughly translates to, “Those who create live twice.” and I couldn’t agree more from the perspective that my life is very full! Now I just have to figure out how to use creativity to double the number of hours I have to work with each day…

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
When I was 15, our family moved overseas to the UK for a year. I was worried about making friends and fitting in, but after a spontaneous visit to a local youth Christmas party, all of those worries disappeared. They welcomed me with open arms, and when the time came, they said goodbye with handmade scrapbooks of our memories and open invitations to visit their homes in the future. What could have been a very lonely and isolated time was actually one of the best years of my life, and I’ll never forget the kindness of the people who I still call my friends to this day.
