Today we’d like to introduce you to Ericka Brown.
Hi Ericka, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my business during the beginning of the pandemic. It started off with just body butters to help with my skin. I have very sensitive skin, yet very dry skin. I’ve been to a dermatologist, and they told me I had a diagnosis of CARP which is a hyperpigmentation of the skin. The ointments they wanted me to us was expensive and even with insurance was almost $300 out of pocket. So, I researched the holistic way. When I learned what natural oils and plants could do for our skin, I instantly went with it. It worked for me in so many ways, and I wanted to share with others that may have issues with their skin. From there I researched chatted with estheticians and taught myself how to treat other things naturally when it comes to our skin. It wasn’t easy starting. I didn’t have much support, but what kept me going was believing in my product and hearing from my aunt how the facial creams worked for her or hearing from my friends how much they love the lip mask and scrub. Educating them as well as growing my business. I am still not where I want to be. But I am so proud of the platform that I’ve created for myself thus far.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been an easy journey. Test runs, the product not being the consistency I needed. I even removed some products from my line until I was more confident in it. Working on getting a website was not easy and still isn’t perfect. But I learned to ask for help and that this business is still mine even when I need help in certain areas. I’ve learned to be okay with I don’t know everything.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In my personal life, I hold so many talents. I can wear so many hats. Creativity has always been something that people knew me for. I have a very wide imagination. And I use that to write a lot. Tons of stories that nobody will ever read. I also journal. I used to write poetry. I used to sing. I also am a retired nail technician. Most of my friends that have known me for years would say I’m known for my hairstyles and wild colors. I grow my hair out and then cut it short, but it’s always a different color. And I have a lot of tattoos. It’s my way of expressing how artsy of a person I am.
