Today we’d like to introduce you to Gino Gotelli
Hi Gino, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My photography journey oddly started with videography. Back in the 90s and early 2000s my friends and I would skate at the skatepark and I would always be the one documenting with a video camera. In 2011 I had finally made my first purchase of a DSLR camera. Back then I barley knew how to operate it and used it mainly for shooting video. I had always wanted to learn photography, but it wasn’t until I met a local photographer in Farmers Branch who would come out to take pictures of people at the skatepark. I was fascinated with his shots and thought, “Well I already have the equipment, maybe its about time I actually learn to use the full functions of this camera” In 2013 I enrolled to an online school called Lynda.com where it had classes on photography. Once I figured out the basics and learned how to operate the camera in Manual Mode, I started taking more photos. Practicing every chance I could, I slowly started developing a style. I’d say I’ve been capturing photos for about 10 years now and having been taking it more seriously in the past two. I’ve started a small business of my own, capturing images for anyone that would hire me. I photograph events, sports and portraits and landscapes in my free time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There was a moment when I thought I’d like to be doing this full-time. But the pressure of not knowing when the next client/gig was going to come became to much to handle. So I decided my photography business is something I’ll do part time. Pick up gigs when I can and when its more convenient for me. It turned out to be a great decision because there are days I’m just not wanting to pick up my camera and I find that my best work comes from moments of no pressure.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for capturing action sports. Rollerblading, skateboarding, and bmx. However I love to capture all kinds of sports. I also focus on events and portraits. I’m proud of how far I’ve come with photography and would say that what sets me apart from others is my use of the “Fisheye” lens. I’d say its not the go-to lens for most photographers, but for my work, its one of my favorites to use.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
