Today we’d like to introduce you to Giselle Hernandez.

Giselle Hernandez

Hi Giselle, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Well, growing up wasn’t easy at all. I was raised in a very poor town. We didn’t have heaters or a/c or warm water to shower. Our daily meals consisted of bread or beans and tortillas. (which is the best meal ever) I always got told that I had to finish school and get a degree on something. I never knew what I wanted to major on. I did know it had to be something I was passion about. because I’d be waking up to that job for the rest of my life. When I entered high school, they had a cosmetology program. I join the program, and that is where I learned I enjoy doing hair. Years later, I finally graduated cosmetology through a community college. A month later, I got the job at Heath Hair Salon and Spa. That is where I completely fell in love with all things hair. Thanks to my coaches/mentors, I have become a better hair stylist; I enjoy my job and making others love themselves through their hair.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely, it hasn’t been smooth for me. After graduating high school, I couldn’t finish my hours for cosmetology. I waited a year when I started looking for other cosmetology schools. Most of the schools I applied for were very expensive! I was never going to afford paying for a school like that plus, I’m a single mother, and I also couldn’t afford to quit my job at the restaurant. I did try to save up for those school, but I was never going to gather the money. One day I went to a community college 5 mins away from my house and asked for the cosmetology program, and I got so lucky because they were taking applications for the program, and it was SO much cheaper than the other school I was trying to save up for. I did lose hope for a moment, but when you really want something life has a way of giving it to you.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Hair Artist at Heath Hair Salon and Spa, I specialize in balayage. It’s not easy creating the perfect balayage or even find a hair color that can fit in someone’s lifestyle. What sets me apart from others is that I listen to my client’s needs, but I also make sure what they say they want is actually what they’re wanting. I am very proud of how much I have invested in my career. For me, education never stops, I like learning new trends and new techniques, so my clients can get into the latest trend in the beauty world.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Yes! Whatever your career is, find a mentor! I am very thankful for the program heath hair has. My mentors have taught me so many things; everything I know now is thanks to them. I know if I’m ever struggling with something, they will help me. Social media is my best friend ever since I started my career. I learned from other through social media, and I’m also attracting my clientele from there.
