Rising Stars: Meet Hannah Baskin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Baskin.

Hannah Baskin

Hi Hannah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started out for me with drawing books. My mom gave me some when I was little, and I remember locking myself in my room and drawing for hours. I still remember their reaction when I was 8. I just learned the grid method and I showed them what I drew, and they were shocked. I knew right then that I was actually good at something that I liked doing.

I am currently a student at the University of North Texas and will be graduating in May. I just completed a residency at the New York Academy of Art this past summer, where I got a full tuition merit-based scholarship. I just recently got accepted into the Royal College of Art in London. I am going to get my master’s there starting fall next year.

I have been showing my work consistently for the past two years, mainly in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area with one group show in New York City so far. I plan on keeping that up and look forward to where that will take me as an artist.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a super smooth road for me to get where I am. I have had a lot of financial blocks and hardships along the way as well as personal doubts. Luckily, I have come across scholarships and a lot of people who believe in me, which has helped me to believe in myself. I also deal with various mental health issues that have made this process both enriched and difficult in various ways.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an interdisciplinary artist. I mainly focus on oil paintings, art performances, installations, and sculptural work. My focus tends to be figurative. I find inspiration from the tensions of internal processes and emotions juxtaposed against everyday life.

I think I am most known for my art performances currently.

I am most proud of the fact that I am staying true to myself by being an artist, no matter what obstacles there are.

I would say what sets me apart from others is that I like to delve into emotions/processes that are not always easy to deal with and express process that through my art. I also like to remain experimental, so I don’t stay bound to a specific process or medium artistically.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I feel like the most important lesson I have learned is perseverance.
