Today we’d like to introduce you to Isis Mckinney.
Hi Isis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Before my transition to Texas, I had not lived outside of the Mississippi/Texas area. After graduation, I decided to take my degree to Texas and begin a career in interior design and residential construction. During my free time, I worked hard to bring my creative ideas to life.
I published a poetry book on self-love and discovery, taking it to spoken word events around the city. I hosted a creative shoot with brands and models in Dallas and had it published in a magazine. I also connected with Dallas’s dance community by hosting classes, participating in showcases like HYPE, producing creative visuals, and so much more.
I’m grateful for the Dallas community and the space it gave me to grow as an artist. The community in Dallas is truly amazing, and I’m grateful to have been a part of it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing was easy, but it was definitely worth it. Coming to a new city with no family or friends. My first step had to be building that community.
Challenges come and arise with finding your people and sometimes getting turned away, but in the end I prevailed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
By day, I worked in residential construction and project management, but my true passion was living life as a creative.
Of all my ideas and productions, my book is what I’m most proud of. It’s a collection of poems written on my phone during my college years—a time filled with self-doubt, heartbreak, and self-discovery. I compiled them into a hardcover book and began sharing it in libraries, women’s spaces, book clubs, bookstores, and other events to tell my story.
What sets me apart is that I’m not chasing trends or trying to be the next big thing. I’m turning my passion and pain into something meaningful—something I can share with others.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I wouldn’t label myself a risk-taker, but I do believe in pushing through moments of doubt to reach the other side—especially when things feel impossible and all you can do is trust yourself. My biggest risk was moving to Texas before my lease on my college apartment was up, with no plan and no financial safety net. I just knew I had to leave and show the world who I was, one step at a time.
