Rising Stars: Meet J Terrell Jeter

Today we’d like to introduce you to J Terrell Jeter.

Hi J Terrell, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started to dive into print modeling when I was in high school. I came from a small town of Haughton, Louisiana.  In turn, opportunities to be in any form of “entertainment” were very limited. At that time, I was not taking modeling seriously. I did not realize (at that age) that in this industry… you really have to push yourself to stand out. Everyone else that’s on the same path are trying to get noticed just like you.

However, being in such a small and non-developed area, the only thing I could do was build my portfolio in print in editorial work. I slowly tried to build through college, but once again, I was limited on what I could do. Back then, the NCAA did not allow sponsorships and “outside” compensation at that time. So, I had to be very selective in what I did.

I was selected to walk in Mimi Faust ‘A Night Under the Stars Fashion Show in 2017 and started to receive calls for more print work from time to time. Those little opportunities really set a fire under me to actually keep going. Once I graduated, I started to take it way more seriously.

Once I moved to Dallas in 2021, everything immediately took off. Opportunities were presenting themselves like crazy. I got accepted in multiple fashion shows including Los Angeles Fashion Week and Dallas Fashion Week and brand collaborations began to become more and more present.

One key thing about me, no matter what the project is, I always want to go BIG. Let’s push the envelope. “What hasn’t been done yet?” is the question that always guides me. I always try to push myself and never be content in any concepts or fashion shows. I always have to ask how can this improve my brand or push the envelope even more to keep this momentum going.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Again, I never really had real guidance on what to do or who to talk to, and I believe now everything is started back up in the fashion world (due to Pandemic), so even if you don’t have a clear understanding or path, I say just jump in and get that experience under you. Opportunities are always there! It’s up to you if your going to take them.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Print/Editorials. However, the runway is becoming. Some of my big accomplishments are definitely walking with Jelaminah Lanier’s brand NormalCulture who was just featured in Forbes, Vogue, and this upcoming Miami Swimweek. She was super sweet, encouraging, and all about her business! That honestly made me raise the bar for myself. I always try to push myself and not put myself in a box.

My photographer always tells me whenever we do a shoot. “I know you’re going to push me because your concepts are huge and very detailed.”

What matters most to you?
I believe in being passionate about what you do regardless. If you don’t…then what is the point. If you are not excited about whatever you’re doing or you can give it your all, then why do it?
