Rising Stars: Meet Jacqueline Flores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Flores.

Hi Jacqueline, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello my name is Jacqueline but Im known as Jaybabyflo. Jaybaby was given to me right before I worked as a radio host & ive never been able to escape that name! So when I got married I wanted to incorporate it somehow so I added the flo short for Flores. And I dont think I’ll ever change my name! But Heres a little about my story, since I was a kid, I remembered 2 things the most #1 was not being socially acceptabled by many people because of my size & #2 watching my oldest sister play with makeup as a teen. My sister had a huge drawer full of makeup and I would just stand there watching her in a daze. It fascinated me how much more confident & beautiful she felt after playing with her makeup! So i started experimenting with all of her makeup while she wasnt home. As soon as I would hear my sister came home, I would rush to the restroom and try to wash off all the makeup! I would walk out all nonchalantly greeting her home but she could tell from my waterproof raccoon eyes something was up. She would get so mad, but that never stopped me! Makeup since then has been my therapy. I knew from that moment forward that this was something i would love to learn to do as a career so I joined cosmetology in 2010 got my license in 2012 & have been doing makeup & hair ever since. I used to travel all over Texas as a freelance makeup artist but since I had my daughter in July of 2021, I’ve been working from my in-home studio located in Waxahachie tx. Being in the makeup field I’ve had a lot of amazing opportunities to work with some awesome photographers for Boudoir sessions, a hair product company called FoxyBae & Facebook just recently. I’ve definitely invested in promoting myself this year & it’s definitely paying off! Finally.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road at all! In this industry, there is always more room to grow & improve by continuing education & practicing your skill. I lacked a support system & that was a big factor for me it stopped me a few times down the road but I always came right back. I would get referrals by word of mouth but honestly, I was never really booked back-to-back until now that I’m promoting myself nonstop. This isn’t just a hobby or something I’m good at it’s my purpose, to be honest.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a licensed Cosmetologist that does both Hair & Pro Makeup. I specialize in glam makeup for my beautiful bridal parties, Quinceañeras & for Boudoir Photoshoots. I’m known in Waxahachie for my makeup skills & my brand Jaybabyflo it’s a broad term to cover all of my traits just like a cosmetologist. I’ve always been proud of myself and how I never let go of my dream to be a makeup artist many people do it as a hobby or a part-time job but I do it full time because even if I’m a small town MUA I do it with pride! What sets me apart from others is I’m a one-stop shop, I wax brows, I do updos & curly hairstyles for any type of event besides just makeup and I’ve been working on doing eyelash extensions and powder brows (permanent makeup) I have not only my own brand but my own merch like T-shirts for example and I’m working on expanding myself in the next few years! I think that really sets an apart from other makeup artists.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I’ve learned that you have to continue to promote your business regardless of what life may through at you. You have to continue to do what’s best for you and your business & that means never giving up. (This too shall pass)
