Rising Stars: Meet Jasmine Kennedy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Kennedy.

Hi Jasmine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Laced was a long time coming but ultimately inevitable. I’ve had a love for fashion since the 5th grade when Bratz dolls came out and I began sketching clothes in my notebooks. Art has been a strong skill of mine I remember one of my drawings being entered into a Crayola contest, winning and having it shown across North Texas which went hand in hand with creating whatever I imagined. Life of course happened and once I hit high school, I put the design book away and focused on expressing my love of fashion through my own wardrobe. I went through many style “phases” from skatepark to bright patent stilettos throughout my teenage years but never followed trends. Even today a 28-year-old mother of 3 I still don’t follow trends and I wouldn’t change that about my brand either. I believe clothes can elevate your mood and your overall aura. In the beginning, I referred to Laced as vibe wear because no matter which piece you choose, you’re going to be feeling yourself which is a whole vibe. Since then, I refer to my brand as statement wear because they definitely make statements people cannot ignore and can’t help but to stare and compliment. Laced is inspired by a few different people I can’t give all of the credit to my marvelous mind. Jai nice the owner of Kloset Envy on Instagram has been a huge inspiration for me for years. She began as a wholesaler with no more than a thousand dollars and built her wealth from the ground up. Brianna of Matte brand is another black woman who’s inspired me over the years also her designs are unapologetically fierce. My birth city Los Angeles, really the whole state of California in all its beauty from the people, the beaches, and the diverse art is also behind Laced. I cater to men and women sizes small through large. Laced will be successful because my kids believe in me and my loved ones do as well. It’s a dream come true and all I want is to get it in front of the world because there really is something for everyone from the laid back to the turned up. I’d like to inspire the next generation to never give up on their dreams, it took 5 years for me to finally take the leap and launch Laced. If I can do it so can you, stay tuned.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest obstacle would have to be doing everything out of my own pocket. I thought business credit and business loans would be easy to get how else do so many people start businesses right. I was so wrong but I’m working on that. In the beginning, I was ordering way too much inventory which thankfully I’ve learned from. Being an entrepreneur is not a guaranteed check if you are not passionate about it you might give up easily.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am both a wholesaler of men’s and women’s fashion and a designer of custom pieces straight from my brain. The Laced bucket hats were a best seller dropping on 2 different occasions and selling out so I’m definitely proud of that. What sets me apart, I don’t sell just anything, my customers are my models and my prices are affordable.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was a quiet creative I loved to draw and create on The Sims. I was and still am very interested in all kinds of music but Aaliyah was number one for me.
