Rising Stars: Meet Jasmine Whetstone of Dallas (Oak Cliff)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Whetstone

Hi Jasmine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?

I grew up in the 90’s in a house where music was always played. But it was Uncle Darius that got me into listening and writing rap music. He was always writing raps songs and still does even until this day. I was the only girl in the house of 6 boys so I did what they did. We use to freestyle using other rap songs beats adding our own twist to it. My family loves to listen to music. My mom listens to raps from her era. One her favorites that became my favorite was “Children’s Story” by Slick Rick my mom would rap that song with the music and I would laugh bc it sounded so different from my age rap but it was something about it that made me like it. Another favorite is “ Everlasting Bass” by Rodney O and Joe Cooley which beat I used in my single”KOKO. So you can say my uncle influenced me to start rapping but the love of music runs in my blood..

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

Getting into the music industry is never smooth. It’s crazy competitive and especially being a female rapper. But anything you want; you have to be willing to work hard for so it’s expected that the road may be rough getting into the rap game. My struggles come from finding the right people to see your dream that can’t help you get to where you trying to go with your music without using your talent for their gain. But right now I know my biggest struggle is from losing my brother DJ 10/5/23, who was my biggest supporter. Right now trying to find my motivation to get back to what I know im purposed for without him being by my side.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, what pays the bills is a regular 9-5 where I work in the field of customer service which funds my studio time other music expenses. My profession is being a rapper. I can say that confidentiality since people in the streets sometime recognize me as “Kolombiana” which is my rap name. I’m most proud of being a mother to my son Ivan. If there is anything that sets me apart from other female rappers is the fact I write my own lyrics. No ghostwriter just me. Most see me as just a pretty girl but my rap style is totally opposite. I been through a lot in life. My music is my life story. I just don’t look like what I been through.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I’m Dallas, grass-root raised. I have been in Dallas my whole life and I love the culture of my city. Love is genuine in Dallas and we have some of the most amazing talent in Dallas. Like I’m a Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers fan for life. Now if there is anything I like least about my city is I feel we should support our artists more. I’m DALLAS MADE and I’m proud of that!!
