Hi Jaylan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was a dancer from the age of five until about 16 years old in my hometown Killeen, Texas. At that time, dance was the best way I felt I could be expressive, and the feeling of performing was absolutely unmatched. Those were undoubtedly the best times in my childhood. After deciding not to pursue dance as a career, I fell in love with fashion styling and design. Cutting up clothing and piecing them together in unconventional ways was something you learn coming from a low-income household when school shopping wasn’t always feasible.
But even in the midst of styling photoshoots and working with amazing people, the idea of being responsible for someone’s wardrobe didn’t move me in a way that dance did, and I was yearning for that feeling. I realized that acting, in my opinion, was one of the rawest forms of expression and in hindsight, it was something I’ve always thought would be cool to do. Now in this moment, as I am fairly new to the acting industry, I finally feel like I’m right where I need to be, and I couldn’t be happier. I am also modeling in a more professional light, and that experience has been nothing but enjoyable. I am always working on my craft, studying, networking, taking classes, and continuing to put my best foot forward in my new career.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not an easy road at all, to keep it a buck. 🙂 More often times than not, I feel stuck or that I’m not doing enough. Starting out and gaining experience as a new actor, you don’t have an agency that’s representing you on your behalf, which helps with legitimacy, access to larger gigs, and more paid work. But in conclusion, I strongly believe that the hustle of having to promote myself during this beginning stage is paying off, so no complaints. 🙂
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an actress/model and I enjoy sharing my personality to the world via expressive content that makes people feel and inspires them to be their most creative selves. As a new actor, I am most proud of my lead role in an upcoming web series called “A MILLI” that will be coming out at the beginning of 2021. I can’t wait for you all to see this project about how millennials can sometimes conform to societal expectations. It’s definitely a relatable story, and I am so honored to be apart of the production.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I will be the first to say that social media has played a huge role in me building relationships and connecting with others that are in the industry. If you utilize social media in a way that serves you/your brand/company/image/etc, the platform can be of great service and is definitely a resourceful tool for networking. I wouldn’t be solely dependent on this, considering it can literally vanish tomorrow, but in the meantime, I would recommend applying this tool in areas that fit you best.
