Rising Stars: Meet Jeanine Johnson of Dallas,TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanine Johnson.

Jeanine, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Providing decorative and wearable art.
j9sTyle&Co. was created in 2010 by artist Jeanine Johnson

Jeanine Johnson (aka JJ) had an interest in art at a very early age, pursuing it from middle school through college. After getting married and raising a family, however, art was put on the back burner. By the time her children were older, she’d toyed around with the idea of revisiting her artistic side, but being a fulltime employee with a company, there just didn’t seem to be enough time to commit to her art.
In 2010, JJ’s mother suffered a major stroke. JJ took some time from work to care for her mother and it was while caring for her mother that she found time to create. Shortly after her mother’s stroke, she lost a beloved aunt who was also an artist. Almost losing her mother and then losing her aunt made JJ realize how important life is. Grasping the concept that time can be fleeting, nor does it stand still, JJ decided to give her art her all.
JJ’s style has always been quite unique, inspired by natural hair and fashion. Like any other artist, her style has progressed over the years and her designs have invoked a collaborative spirit that she shares with others. Her company j9sTyle&Co. has taken off with major collaborations to place her art and illustrations on accessories and even illustrating a few children’s books with Cathryn’s Garden being the first. You will find something in at least one of her pieces that you can relate to.

“Your sTyle tells a sTory about SELF. Some may like it, some may not, but it’s your story… sTyle it!”
~JJ

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been an easy journey, I’m still working a full time job. Juggling a corporate job and working my own business not to mention still being a hairstylist can all be a little much lol. Especially at the young age of 51!(hehe)
Sometimes I literally will sit stuck in my thoughts with no actions. I do however create some of my best pieces under pressure.
I started this journey while still being a wife and full time mom as well, so that was a bit much but inspired me to push harder as I was building a legacy.
During Covid I was at my very best as an artist but maybe not necessarily as wife and mom. My art received all the attention and love and that’s where my business would skyrocket!
As we got used to the new normal I went back into the office and things slowly settled. At 49 I decided I was not fulfilled in all areas of my life. I separated from my husband while our youngest went away to college. I then was laid off from my 9-5 and j9style&Co. took front seat again allowing me to maintain somewhat of a lifestyle. Fast forward to today at 51 I’m single working in corporate again but trying to figure out my exit as I know my true passion is creating and that’s what’ is going to fulfill my middle aged creative heart.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My 9-5 I work as an Admissions Rep for a trade school. Where in my office my art is in fact displayed.
As far as my art I create wearable and decorative art, most being one of a kind. I’ve been in art since middle school through college. In 2011 I taught myself to sew and from there I went into creating furniture. Today I offer canvas art, custom furniture, clothing designs, custom bags and more.

What matters most to you? Why?
Building a legacy for my children and grandchildren. Not for fame but to show them they can create their desired lifestyle.
