Today we’d like to introduce you to Jelly Cocanougher.
Hi Jelly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I picked up a brush at a young age, often caught in the act of painting things I wasn’t supposed to – such as drawing all over my body with my mother’s lipstick before I could talk. The tale of my creative venture expanded around me. The older I got, the more I questioned how to be unique with my creative streak. I starting off with my classmates consulting with me to do their art projects in exchange for cash – sparking a need to live to create. I was sitting on a goldmine – not monetary gain, but for the sake of creation. Feeding the soul with art, if you will.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have what I call my blue period – when no ideas come to mind and nothing excites me. Which is gone after a week or so – after a needed break. That’s the biggest challenge in myself – what do I create?
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
BadHorse is a name I came up with to house all of the mediums I like to dabble in; photography, painting, design, web development, interior design, styling, leatherwork and more. It’s hard focusing on one thing when there are so many things to create! The feeling is unreal when people of all ages stand in your view and express that they enjoy seeing what work you have completed. Whether it be someone’s grandparents that love reading my writing or a fellow Instagrammer that follows me on social. It’s a humbling feeling to know and to have that bond with people that they connected to whatever it is you’re creating.
An end goal, for me, is to be able to see with my eyes and transform it into creative art. I often admire those who stay off-grid and into the wild, out of the normal world, being one with their medium and letting it express through their lifestyle. In the western world, I am known as a designer and photographer – taking what I see on my day to day and transforming it into something. I’m a true wanderer and a daydreamer. Free, in spirit. Though, I jokingly call myself a Jelly of all trades. Plainly, I am a visual artist.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
There are people who showcase the trends, and there are the people who came up with the idea. You might not know who they are, but the article of clothing you’re wearing or that funky piece of furniture you’re sitting on came from someone who was ahead of the curve. Which is a totally beautiful way of looking at art. The conceptual birth of art each time something is created and watching it grow in time. I try to stay in the realm of both aspects in creating and wearing the creations, all while being subtly avant-garde and whimsical… Whatever I’m vibing with. At the same time, it’s totally cool to see people wear what you had a hand in designing or seeing people’s reactions when your work catches the eye of someone. As far as imagery goes – I try to use unique angles and play with light as much as I can. My goal is to often create emotion behind the image, whether it be movement and action or something more somber or happy with different tone of color.
