Rising Stars: Meet Jenna Edmonds

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Edmonds.

Hi Jenna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I entered the cosmetology field after climbing the restaurant industry ladder for 13 years. I needed a change of pace and to refocus my priorities. I knew it was going to be an incredible challenge but with my family and village behind me, I got it done. After graduating, I landed my dream job at a high-end luxury salon where I received an excellent education specializing in color. While I am forever grateful for my education, the ultimate goal was to have the flexibility to spend more time with my husband and daughter. I moved on to my own private suite in North Dallas where I am behind the chair 3-4 days a week. I am still able to help out at my daughter’s school and be home for dinner. It has been absolutely rewarding.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think anyone attempting a career change and salary change with a family is an incredible feat. It was not easy. We were taking an income loss, a new student debt, childcare was now stretched thin between daycare and family, and date nights with my husband were a thing of the past. I was very lucky to have my family’s support in so many ways. I went into it knowing that I could not afford to fail. I was entering a world that I didn’t know with kids a decade younger than me. I took every opportunity I could to make the most of the experience and I didn’t go into it half-heartedly. Despite the challenges my family has faced these last few years, I would do it all over again and encourage anyone considering a change to go for it, no matter how scary or impossible it seems.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I provide a luxury treatment in a private suite. I specialize in color and love creating natural looks. I also cut and style. I absolutely love the color side of the industry. It provides me with so much creativity while incorporating science and chemistry. It really takes a lot of brain power and continuing education to be a great colorist. I am always looking to learn for myself and educate my clients to get the best out of their hair. I also think having a personal connection with people is important to our industry. There is a lot of trust that is created in a short amount of time. The ability to play the role of therapist, hairstylist, and educator all in one can be daunting but overall, I am touched to be that person for so many people.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I believe success is defined differently for everyone. For me, my personal idea of success has taken on new meanings as I get older but ultimately, I think happiness is the baseline for success. When we are young, we tend to dream of fortune and fame and, of course, we all want financial success but realistically, I want to be happy and balanced. That, to me, is success at this point.
