Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Reyes.
Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Well! Funny story, I actually knew at an early age that one day I’d like to open my own salon. After all, I have been doing my little sister’s hair since birth! After graduating high school, I decided to attend community college, my interest shifted, and thought that nursing would be a rewarding career, more specifically working with babies. After a while, I came to the conclusion that my goal of becoming a neonatal nurse would be very tough on me emotionally and wasn’t the path for me. It wasn’t until a little over 3 years ago I decided to take a tour of the Paul Mitchell campus in San Antonio, Texas. I fell in love! I knew that this was where I belonged all along. After graduating Paul Mitchell, it took me a couple of failed interviews to land me my first job as a hairstylist at Studio 27. They’re a big part of why I am where I am today. Currently, I am an independent hairstylist. Last year I also started my small business Tousled Sleek, I sell hair scrunchies handmade by me. That’s been going pretty good too! You can find all my work on IG @jessicareyeshair and my hair scrunchies @tousledsleek.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. Life definitely happens. Working 40 hrs. a week while going to school full time took a toll on me. Then of course there was the time I got fired while going to school, that was a really stressful time for me because I didn’t know if I’d be able to finish school or how I’d pay my bills. Eventually, I got a part-time job at a men’s salon to help with my bills. With the constant support and help of my family, I got through school. I’ll be forever grateful for them.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As you know now, I am a hairstylist in San Antonio Texas. My specialty is in balayage services. A balayage is a form of highlighting that offers a more natural look with a softer grow out. Plus, it’s a highlighting service that is the least high maintenance. My most favorite are my brunettes. I love the look of a dimensional brunette, it’s such a beautiful contrast to me. Recently I decided to take a chance on myself and become an independent stylist and I would say that is what I am currently proud of.
Other than that, I am most proud when my clients are happy. I truly love enhancing woman’s natural beauty. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing that little spark in their eyes after they’d been in my chair for hours. Or seeing my clients check themself out in the mirror and doing a hair flip. When I see them smile or I see their self-esteem go from 0 to 100 once we’re done, that is everything to me.
My goal in life is to make every woman feel and see the beauty I see when they walk through the door and I think that’s what sets me apart from other stylists.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Find mentors who have the same values and truly love what they do. When I see hairstylist who are passionate and offer as much advice to help professionals, it inspires me to be the best version of myself and I find that that’s what I gravitate towards.
