Today we’d like to introduce you to John Consignado
Hi John, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my podcasting as a typical bored individual during the COVID lockdown back in May 2020. I tried my hand in several formats from true crime, to comedy, which ultimately led me to meeting my co-hosts: Josh and Sean on Twitter (at the time) where we ended up hosting on each other’s respective shows.
We built an instant chemistry and out of nowhere I asked them if they wanted to collaborate and create something new together. The original concept of Reddit on Wiki was a history/comedy podcast where we brought up random topics and terribly use Reddit and Wikipedia as our main source of research. Josh then randomly brought an AITA segment one episode and it became an instant hit on TikTok, reaching over a couple of million plays. Since then, we have pivoted the show to be more Reddit centric, focusing on subreddits such as AITA, relationship advices, and telling tales of petty revenges and so forth.
3+ years and 300+ episodes later, we have been blessed by an amazing community we lovingly call our WikiManiacs, and it’s amazing to look back that 3 complete strangers found each other and became such good friends.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not, and I don’t think we have wanted it any other way. We started rough and it took us a couple of years to be where we are right now. Our early iteration of the show is completely different from what our listeners are now accustomed to. Additionally, being 3 random strangers who doesn’t have professional experience in marketing, media production, running a business, etc presented challenges, but luckily we have a strong bond and we are each other’s biggest supporters.
We’re fortunate to have opportunities like this to spotlight and showcase our show as I believe we have something extremely entertaining and the world just needs to hear about us and hopefully give us a try.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What we do in Reddit on Wiki is specialize on giving unprofessional, yet somehow logical advice when it comes to daily conundrums. What I’m most proud of our show is our authenticity, humility, and willingness to grow not just as content creators, but as people. Also, not to toot our own horns (but I will), our listeners have said that we are pretty funny as a trio.
I’m incredibly proud of being part of such a wholesome and positive community, and we always say in the show that we take no credit at building it, we just happen to be catalyst that brought our listeners together and the WikiManiacs made it to something special. Our listener base are loyal, empathetic, but also quick to give us constructive feedback when we don’t things right at times and I feel like we built equity with them that they feel that they are heard and their voices matter. Lastly, I would like to credit our listeners for being such caring people and with their efforts, we were able to raise funds to support causes all over the world.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The whole premise of Josh, Sean, and I working together was the definition of taking a risk. Three complete strangers who knew nothing about each other decided to create a show and start a business together. To this day, I find it funny how the 3+ years we’ve worked with each other that we’ve only met each other twice in person.
Additionally, deciding to take a leap of faith and overhaul the show to the version it is today was a risk that we took and we’re so glad that it paid off for the better.
