Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonāi Lee.
Hi Jonāi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started off as a Team Lead Lash Consultant at Amazing Lash Studio in Garland. Being able to be a leader and also consulting clients with different ways to enhance their natural beauty was so delightful for me. I loved to help all the stylists and clients on reaching their beauty goals! Truly something I wanted to be more a part of and closer with, so I started to taking classes and become my own Lash Artist. I wanted to be able to enhance women’s natural beauty because I seen how much it meant to them. When COVID hit, I started to branch off and learn more about the Lash industry. Got into certification and then went off and got Licensed with the state of Texas. I wasn’t able to Lash and also work as a Team Lead at the lash studio, so I left and became my own business. Ever since then I have been building my clientele since 2020 and still have loyal clients since Day 1. I was always open to try new things with the lash industry. I started doing small facials for my clients and now willing to bring in waxing and Henna Brows for services soon!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, you will make mistakes. I’ve made plenty on my end, but my clients never knew. I have accidentally overbooked myself and double booked as well. School put a minimum on my clients as well because it took most of my time. But I was destined to finish it and to know I’ll be able to lash the right way. Dropping tweezers is like a breakup for us Lash Artists, once we drop them it’s a wrap! Lol. That’s when I learned to buy multiple tweezers just for that case. I had to move locations 4 times within my business, most of my clients were able to follow me, but the others the location made it difficult. And also, my timing with doing lashes has been a struggle as well in the beginning. You have some clients who can’t lay as long as others. In the beginning, it took me 8 hours just for a full set! Then I was able to get to 4 hours within a couple of weeks because I kept trying and didn’t want to give up. I am currently sitting at an hour or an hour and a half just for a full set. And I’m proud to be able to get there just because I went from taking 2 -3 clients a day to taking almost 10 or more a day for refills and Full Sets.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Texas Cosmetologist, and I specialize in Eyelash Extensions. I have been featured with some of the top lash businesses/ stores, such as GladGirl. I am known for my professionalism and being “Ms. Jack of all Trades,” ; from helping my dad in our Family Trucking business, going to school for Law/Criminal Justice, making clothes, designing shoes, making banners, flyers, and more. I am proud to be where I am just because I didn’t think I would make it this far, nor have all the bonds that I have created with all of my clients. Every now and then I will offer refresher courses or even New student lash courses to anyone who is willing to learn. I make sure every student understands the concept behind lashing. From Safety & Sanitation, Isolation, Disinfection, Eye Anatomy & Eye Health, Hair growth cycles, Eye shapes, Extension Types, Lash Knowledge, Client consultation, Hand Placements, Lash mapping and Taping methods, and more. I used to think just because I was juggling a lot of things at once; I wouldn’t be steady and focused. But one thing I can say is lashing is very therapeutic to me, and I enjoy what I do just because I know I’m making others look good as well! A lot of us women need and love to wear just lashes because we notice a complete difference, and it makes our confidence higher. I don’t wear makeup everyday myself , but when I have my lashes on, boy! A complete new person. I love talking to my clients and consulting on which look they desire to accomplish. I’m all about a Natural look; that’s one reason I set apart from others. When lashing my clients, I make sure their natural lashes are still completely growing in fuller and stronger with wearing extensions, and I will also apply Lash serum if needed with my all clients. I am all about Healthy lashes! A lot of women just want lashes that still looks natural and don’t want that Too Bold dramatic look. I’m all about whatever my client is wanting. I just want everyone to look beautiful!
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future is to open one big salon and have a One-stop spa for all women. From Lashes, Nails, Waxing, V-Stem, Hair, Braiding, Brows, Massages and more! Having all of these services all in one big salon with so many creative people and professionals. It’s hard to always go to different places for all these things. And to have it all in one will be so amazing to me and also to others! I want every woman to be able to come in and feel like their home and just relax and get pampered. And I will continue to make this happen by 2024. I would also love to Thank Ms. Bailey at Dallas Lash Academy for helping me get to where I am today!
