Rising Stars: Meet Joshua Godly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Godly.

Hi Joshua, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My story is not as easy as it may seem. I’m only 21 years old, and there have been way too many trials and errors. But somehow, I’ve been blessed to be in the position I’m in. Here is a summary of how I got to where I am today. I’ve always been musically talented since I was a little boy. I played drums and bass guitar since I was 13 years old. So, knowing this much helped me a lot to pursue the career I’m currently in. It all started when I lost my job due to the pandemic. Once Covid hit back in 2020, I decided to take whatever money I had and do something great with it. I ended up buying my first DJ board in the summer. I had no idea what I was doing, so it took a lot of time to figure it out. With the help of my friend Tavish, I was off to a great start. Mixing music day and night in the hope of my first gig. Sooner or later December of 2020 comes around, and my friend Dennis reaches out. He landed me my first gig, and I’m forever grateful. (There are a lot of people I will be mentioning that I would like to be in the article).

From there I thought my career was going to take off, but I had no idea what I was in for. 2o21 comes around, and I had roughly 15 gigs that year. Throughout this journey, there were plenty of times when I wanted to give up because I felt discouraged, and it was hard to see a future with this career. At the moment where I felt like giving up, my guy Dennis reaches out again and ask’s if I wanted this job to run sound at this nightclub. At first, I declined the offer because I didn’t know much about running sound. But I gave it a chance, and from there it was nothing but greatness!! Being at this club gave me a lot of connections. I was exposed to different DJs which allowed me to become a better creator, and this is why I give credit where credit is due. I got the chance to meet so many DJs that put me on a lot of games. DJs such as DJ Carlyle, DJ “Q,” DJ Double J, Dj air, Dj d-train, Dj hard box, Dj shellshock, Dj honey, DJ kylegothatcannon, and SO many more. These people are the reason why I am where I am today. Carlyle specifically gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to Dj at this club I’ve been wanting to Dj at for so long. I can’t thank him enough for constantly guiding me and believing in me. I also got to give a shoutout to my guy Mario, AKA sound guy number 2 for always keeping me in check and making sure I stay focused. He’s one of those people who really saw me start from the ground up.

Although I’ve been working at the nightclub as a “job’, I wanted to Dj so bad. Since December of 2021, I’ve been watching all these people before me. I would take what I learned and put it into practice. When DJs didn’t show up to their gigs, it was an opportunity for me to step up. Eventually, I was able to Dj at this club which made this my 1st home club (Five Am Theater) Since then, it’s only been up! With the help of DJ Carlyle and my boss (Sam), I was able to land my 2nd home club (Theory Uptown). This journey was never easy, and it still isn’t as easy as it may seem. I had to use social media as a platform to gain a following. I used TikTok a lot to practice my mixes and my MC’ing skills. I had to adjust to the nightlife, which I was never used to because it was my first time in the club scene. Even though it’s been hard, I couldn’t be more thankful for how it shaped me into becoming a better Dj. My passion for the music industry keeps growing, and I’m hopeful for the future because I know this career was made for me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What sets me apart from others is being able to watch and learn. I’ve never been taught how to specifically do something. If I wanted to do something, I would watch the people or things in front of me and reciprocate.

What do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I feel like if it’s meant for you, it will come to you. Talent will always speak for itself.
