Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Labosco.
Hi Justin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started drumming at age 9, my father go me a drum set for Christmas one year, I started playing and never stopped. I joined my first band and played my first live gig at 13 in Deep Ellum, ever since then I was hooked. After our first show I borrowed my Dad’s 4 track recorder and engineered my band’s first EP, I knew music production and engineering was something I’d want to continue doing. I toured in bands as a drummer as well as running a recording studio out of my home. Around my late teens I developed a passion for singing, piano, guitar, bass and songwriting. In my early 20’s I switched to being the frontman of a band called Quiet on the Set where we released albums, played shows and did music videos. Around this time is where I began teaching drums, guitar, piano, vocals, songwriting and music production. I loved teaching from the start, I loved my students and constantly pushed them to practice harder, while keeping it fun. The results of their hard work is so rewarding to me. I’ve been teaching around 12 or 13 years now and plan to continue for the rest of my life. After teaching at an established school for 6 years I decided to open my own school in Flower Mound (where I grew up). I knew I could do something unique by incorporating music classes as well as fine art classes and a fully equipped recording studio, kinda making a “one stop shop” for the arts. Being a small business I care deeply for my students and will never let it become a sort of “factory, in and out” establishment. We recently did a name change from Colors Oh My to Flower Mound Art and Music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a musician is never an easy road, there’s always a ton of doubt of if you’re going to be able making a living doing music and being and engineer. I used to have terrible stage fright so performing was something I definitely had to get used to. The struggles of opening a new business are always difficult, the constant thought of “do we have enough business to pay rent” so on and so forth. However the Flower Mound community is the greatest, they have been incredibly supportive of us.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are a music and art school as well as a full recording studio. We’re known for keeping our lessons incredibly fun as well as helping them absorb information. The last thing we want is for the kids to go from school and then go BACK to school.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Come register for art or music classes. Also book some time in our recording studio!
