Rising Stars: Meet Justin Rhodes of Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Rhodes.

Justin Rhodes

Hi Justin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Oak Cliff Texas. I got very intrigued about music at a young age listening to Sam Cooke, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye etc on long road trips to Louisiana with my family. I was the youngest sibling, so I was often put on to all of the music they were listening to. Tupac, SWV, TLC, TOO SHORT, Jodeci, you name it. Around Late elementary early middle school I got introduced to a group called Outkast and they changed my life. Soon after I started to want to write my own rhymes. I was part of a collective called INF (Instructions Never Followed) in middle school. My friend was the producer, but one day I had to make a beat and it really came out good. From there I went to UNT (University of North Texas). Here is where I would lock myself in my dorm room and apartment, often missing classes to hone the craft of production. When I came back to Dallas I continued to build my name winning beat battles all of the country. Eventually I joined the SKP production team with S1 who was fresh off of producing Power for Kanye West. From here a wave of industry placements with many of the who’s who in the industry occurred. I’ve since went on to excel in music, film and education as a Berklee College of Music Professor and author.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Success is never a smooth road. Of course there have been L’s along the way. I don’t like to look at them as losses though, just lessons.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Music Producer, Film maker and Director, Author & Berklee College of Music Professor. I’m most known for my production, but my many other creative talents are growing popular as well. I’m most proud of winning a Grammy WHILE being myself. I didn’t change my sound or who I was as a person. My ability to master so many different creative mediums is what sets me a part.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
A Vegas Road Trip with my family. I loved the way the city never slept.
