Rising Stars: Meet Kadi Sessums

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kadi Sessums.

Hi Kadi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Starting out I didn’t focus on my career I started out taking a salon job that I knew would give me consistent income and I focused fully on haircuts. My passion in this industry has always been hair color. I took a part-time job at a salon learned the techniques, and how to gain clientele, and fully focused on what I really wanted to learn. Again, I gave up & went back to what I was comfortable with. After covid happened, I was ready for more so I started renting a suite and built my business from the ground up again with my sister, best friend & niece. Two years in, we have a consistent clientele, a product line we are releasing & a new salon location we are moving into. It’s been a hard, risk-taking journey but it has become so rewarding.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been easy. I work all day & some late nights sometimes. There’s been weeks where I didn’t know how rent would get paid because I was working on building my clientele & I didn’t have enough return to stay consistent. I’ve learned to work with the client’s schedule while still taking your time to yourself. Managing a business while being a full-time mom has taught me to manage my schedule, and work even when you’re supposed to be off & take vacations! Learning how to manage your income knowing it’s not consistent but planning ahead has been something I’ve had to adapt to. Overall, the flexibility I have to be there for my son & still get to do what I love makes it all worth it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in balayage/blondes. Blondes will have to be my favorite because no matter what there’s so many different blondes & shades you get to explore. Majority of my clients come to me wanting dimension in their hair creating the different tones in it so no matter how they style it still looks good. I’m known for a lived-in, low-maintenance look that gives our client’s hair a soft grow-out so they don’t need to come back to the salon as often & they can maintain the color at home.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
When starting your own business, risk-taking is a huge factor and process of your business practices. You have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone to bring in clients that will not only support you but by word of mouth will get your business out to everyone they interact with. This provides marketing for your business & when you create a comfortable relationship with these clients who are at first strangers, you build trust. At first, I was very anxious & had a difficult time opening up to be personable with my clients but with time I realized that once I stepped out of my zone, I could assist my clients with finding their forever salon.
