Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalvin Sheesh.
Kalvin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
There’s one version of the narrative behind this recording artist that is correct. Out in the real world, you may hear a bunch of he said she said. That will always come with the territory. In this day in age, it’s not about money. I say “More music, more problems.”
My journey towards becoming a recording artist started very young. I was inspired by pretty much all of my family to love music and the process it takes to make it. My father was one of the first people to teach me songwriting with lyricism. Naturally, the art of poetry has always come very easily to me.
I was just a young man born in New Orleans who indulged in the culture of jazz, hip-hop, and funk music. The energy in that city made me love all sounds really. By the time I was ten years old, we moved to Texas.
I was always a singer but never really pursued the art. My Family was very much a sports family, so I played many. What made me realize my voice was separate from other was my choir performances. I think 8th grade was the first year I recognized the power of my voice singing alone with the other students, but always ended up teaching the class when the teacher was busy with prep work. Moving into high school, I did more theatre work. Which moved me into a life of Cinema. After high school, I got a two-year degree in film and dramatic arts. Which led me down a slightly different path of acting. Although I love the craft of Film, it wasn’t enough to pour into my soul. What I actually wanted to do was make my own music.
So, I created Kalvin with a K.
Then when people heard my music, they would hear little ad-libs of me saying (SHEESH) so one day my barber in LA said you should be KALVINSHEESH. Once I developed an artist name I felt comfortable with, the music began to just flow out of me. (First rule to this music industry is create a stage presence you love and run with it)
Granted, I had my stage name, I had my drive but still nowhere to record. At this point in my life, it was 2019 going into 2020, the world was in shambles, and I had no place to record any of my ideas… 3 1/2 years ago, when the world was in a very scary place, I was down on myself not knowing what my next move would be.
I called a number I found on Google hoping to find someone to point me in the right direction. The voice on the other end said, “I just opened my own studio; you should come through, and let’s see what we can put together.”
The very first session with a man who has become a good brother of mine Ervin Ablev from Lustforsounds studio in Los Angeles
The song we made was an absolute hit for an artist who had never really set foot in a recording booth for something like this. We just knew exactly what each other wanted and needed. Song was “WCYSIM” Ervin says what does this mean I told him “What Can’t You See In Me,” Ervin says Why?
I said because all my life the things I want seem to just overlook me. Ervin said you make music like this; no one will ever be able to do that again.
I had this unstoppable drive to record more music, to create sounds that would place me in an artist light.
This light would be achieved with my first major single and video to a song called “OTP” (on the phone) as you can see, I love Acronyms for song titles. How this song/video came about is kind of a wild story. I met a young man named Donnie Jacob from Sacremento California (@donniejacobmedia) of all places I met him playing Fortnite the video game. We were in a match coming of a victory going for are second win. Out of nowhere, I asked Donnie what do you do, he says “I am a Videogroaher, and I work for a big church up here in Sac” I replied with “Have you ever thought about shooting music videos” to which he said “yes, god hasn’t found the right move to be made” then I responded “now is the right move” just two-three months after that conversation I was on my way to North Tahoe California to shoot the video that changed the trajectory of my career. I would highly recommend going to my YouTube Channel Kalvin Sheesh and take the time to watch all the visuals. One of the most important ways to make your music transparent is offering a video to match the energy.
After this video and song did numbers the real work starting coming in. Producers wanting to send me beats, artists wanting to collab, and bookings for performances.
It wasn’t immediate, but over the past two years, a lot of opportunities were presented.
A lot of my signature sounds, lyrics, and pop trap crazy waves were forced on me from my circumstances. Which were the legends I worshipped, the legends I’ve been around and had the pleasure to see work. Back in 2016 when I had no job I worked as a runner in a recording studio where I saw some of my favorite artists develop some of my favorite music to this date. Artists like (Chris Brown, Young Thug, French Montana, Tyga) I learned the art of being a recording artist.
Also, my own mental health issues I was dealing with really fed into my music.
To end this spill, I haven’t found the biggest audience in the world, I’m definitely not one of the biggest artist by far.
Although this is true, I am extremely grateful for my fans, friends, and family who have supported me to this day. Everyone knows it’s a hard journey to be heard as an artist. But a true artist knows that this craft isn’t meant for other people. If you love what you’re doing, so will the people you are trying to connect with. My name is Kalvin Sheesh, recording artist, dancer, singer, songwriter, and Actor. I love making music, I love performing, and I’d love it if one day you get to witness either one.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t believe there’s a smooth road for any career path in life. The road is always bumpy, and you got to keep moving forward until the wheels fall off. Everybody deals with struggles; that’s what it means to “get it out the mud.” Everyone struggles differently, but we all carry the burden of wanting to do more. Whether it’s for us or for some entity in life that we let motivate us. I do this for my family who never got the chance to do what they love because their circumstances didn’t allow it. On the other hand, not everyone wants to work with you. I’ve encountered a lot of jealousy and scam-like behavior from hundreds of people saying they can offer me help or guidance. 95 percent of people
Are full of it, but those small percent of people who can really change the narrative that’s the real test in this game. Being able to spot who is “about it” and who ain’t.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What separates me from other artist is my ability to network. When I go to other cities or states, I have made an impact on other artists and creators. This has got me inside some rooms that most people don’t have the chance to see. From acting, modeling, dancing, and singing I’ve set myself apart by being a powerhouse in all four areas. Never fearful of any challenges. Another thing that keeps me in my own lane is the ability to create quickly. “Creating on my toes,” I like to call it. Sometimes you don’t get the opportunity to prepare, so you need that feeling to surge through you in the moment to create a masterpiece. That is a God-given gift that some have and others don’t. Both ways are good, but time is money in all things. “So, either cook something or get out the kitchen.”
