Today we’d like to introduce you to Karlyn “KMo” Morrison
Hi Karlyn “KMo”, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey cousin! My name is KMo! I am an Oklahoma Native that moved to Dallas 9 years ago. I currently reside in Downtown Dallas. I am the founder of the longest running community for Black women in Texas called Black Girls of Texas. I started BGOT 6 years ago when I didn’t see a way for Black Women to be connected in the city. Back then, there wasn’t a big drive for community and togetherness like we see now.
I have always had leadership capabilities since I was a child. I am a middle child and the eldest daughter so that let’s you know I am a go-getter! Being able to showcase Black women’s businesses and build connections throughout several parts of Texas has sparked many collaborations and other opportunities for the brand and myself.
My brand showcases that Black women DO get along and CAN support one another despite what the media portrays. Many will say “no mean girl energy” but we live it. Many of our cousins (that’s what we call our community) can attest to that. I take pride in showcasing Black Women (and people) in a positive light.
I love everybody but I cater to the wellbeing and growth of Black people.
To date we have had some major collaborations with Good Molecules, Estée Lauder and our biggest one which was Netflix: Strong Black Lead. We also are big on building relationships within the community. We have partnered with Dallas Weekly, Toast for Charity, Pink Lucy and our favorite Dallas Greek Socialites just to name a few.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I haven’t had too many struggles with building BGOT as it has organically grown over the years with little issues. I will say one of the biggest struggles was working while building a community. The work/life balance can be difficult with having to be places and show up for others. I’ve made it work through the years and I also have a great team that helps me balance it all.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in building community and bringing people together. I am known for my larger than life personality and having the gift of gab. Aside from BGOT, I also host events and I have tapped into doing red carpet interviews for indie films I am most proud of my growth as a leader and being able to be a safe space in the community. I also started modeling in 2022 and have done several photoshoots.
What sets me apart is that I am unapologetically myself at all times. I am a genuine soul and what you see is what you get. I take pride in my authenticity. It’s always all love! My life mission is to serve others.
What are your plans for the future?
My ultimate goal is to be global with my brand. I want to expand beyond Texas with building community and sharing my love for others while highlighting them. I also plan to expand our tour. This year I started the “Pull Up Cousin” tour where we pull up on Black Businesses and allow them to share their story on camera. We upload the videos to our YouTube channel “The Black Girls Network”. My hope is to go to various states and other parts of the world with it.
