Today we’d like to introduce you to Keontaye Harris.
Hi Keontaye, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi, my name is Keontaye “High Key” Harris! I’m the owner of Marsh Lane Mafia Kickboxing! I was born and raised in Flint, Mi. I’m a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy with a degree in communication studies! After college, I set out to look for a career in radio! After brief stops in Charlotte, NC & Richmond, VA! I landed here in Dallas, Tx! After 4 yrs. of working in the radio industry, having a blast, making people smile around the metroplex. I wanted to change people’s lives in a different way! I started my fitness career as a personal trainer at a local fitness center, even though I enjoyed my time as a PT I knew I was destined for more. I was draw to an ad to become a Kickboxing instructor! I started as a part-time instructor working for a franchised kickboxing studio and quickly moved up the ranks! By the end of my first year with the franchise, I was voted Manager of the Year & was then promoted to General Manager over 5 locations! Jan 2021 I was blessed with the opportunity to purchase the gym that I once started as a part-time instructor and re-branded the gym’s name to what you see today as Marsh Lane Mafia Kickboxing!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the struggles along the way started in 2020 as myself and countless other businesses around the world felt the effects of Covid 19! After recovering from being out of business for two months my gym was able to re-open and get back to business as usual! Feb 2021 after recently purchasing the gym from the previous owner (Jan 2021) my gym was completely flooded out due to the Snowstorm that hit Texas! My gym shut down Feb 17, 2021, and did not reopen until May 1st, 2021! In the past two years, I’ve had two shutdowns to my business. I’m thankful for my rockstar members that stuck with me during those tough times, but as the saying says “Tough times don’t last, only tough people do”
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an Owner/operator of a Mafia Kickboxing! My gym is a cardio fitness kickboxing studio where all fitness levels are accepted! My gym teaches people how to fall in love with fitness and enjoy working out again in a fun high energy classes! At 𝗠𝗮𝗳𝗶𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗯𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗻𝗴, we believe that true fitness 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙖 𝙫𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙚. That’s why our inclusive, tight-knit community is at the heart of our boutique studio, both on and off the mats.
Unlike corporate gyms that often treat their members like numbers in a database, we’re locally owned and operated and treat 𝗮𝗹𝗹 of our community members like family.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Important lesson that I’ve learned during Covid crisis is to always stay even with my emotions! Never get too high or get too low as you have to continue to roll with the punches in this ever-so-changing world that we live in today!
