Rising Stars: Meet Kevin K-Lew Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin K-Lew Lewis.

Hi Kevin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I am a professional musician out of Dallas, Tx. I came from a musical family and got my start at a very young age playing drums at my grandad’s church. I got my first paying gig at the age of 12. My first gig outside of Dallas came at the age of 16. I studied music for two years at Cedar Valley Community College after returning to Dallas from Prairie View A&M University in 2006. I have been blessed to tour the world playing drums behind artists such as Avant, Rhymefest, Dave Hollister, Quentin Moore, and more. I am currently the drummer for Quentin Moore and In10city Entertainment. Even though I love music and everything about it, I’ve also always had a passion to be in media. I studied communications while at Prairie View A&M University before coming back to Dallas. In 2018, I decided to start a podcast with my uncle and close friend by the name of The Brooklyn/214 Podcast on YouTube. My co-host was from Brooklyn and with me being from Dallas, the name just came naturally. We covered everything in sports and entertainment. It was a tough grind building the show, but we stayed consistent and built a little momentum after a year in it. We start having guest join the show and even added 2 new co-hosts to the show. Late in 2019, my co-host started to lose his passion for the show. When covid hit in 2020, it marked the end of the Brooklyn/214 Podcast. I thought about quitting, but my passion for being in media wouldn’t let me. I started fresh and created Dope Kontent. I spell it with a K because it wasn’t trademarked. I started streaming wrestling content on twitch because it was the only thing that was really going on live tv at that time. With people being so desperate for content at that time, it was easy for me to grow a following on the platform. I built a community of fans that was just so happy to network with others outside of their homes. I slowly started to add gaming, music, and sports content to see how it would do. I grew a following of over 5,500 people in 2020 and 2021. I am currently above 6,100 followers and a twitch affiliate who is a part of the twitch sports streaming team. In 2022, I wanted to expand the brand and focused on building my YouTube following again. I host 3 different podcasts on both platforms. The Budget Cut Podcast is a weekly podcast that focus on wrestling. The Dope Sports Podcast is a podcast that focuses on sports. The Dope Kontent Podcast is podcast that focuses on everything in the music and entertainment industry. I went from struggling to get 800 subscribers on YouTube to getting over 2,000 subscribers in a 3–5-month period. I also became a YouTube partner. I am currently over 5,418 subscribers on YouTube while maintaining my 6,100 plus on Twitch and now 2,800 followers on Facebook. I also have my own website where you can view all of the content as well as purchase merch. I’ve had world-famous musicians, music producers, top NCAA athletes, championship-winning HS athletes, and pro boxers join my podcast recently. I’ve connected with former and current NFL stars via my video game streams. I’ve also had radio personalities join my show. This has led me to new opportunities. I won the Hot 93.3 Hot Jock radio DJ competition that allowed me to interview grammy nominated artist Charlie Puth and do a full episode live on the radio. I haven’t reached my ultimate goal of becoming a full-time radio DJ yet, but I am closer than ever. I know I will get there but I will continue to build my brand in the meantime.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggles I had to deal with as a musician was me not being flashy enough. I’ve been told that I should be flashier on stage a few times. I’m more of a “play the music and stay out of the way” type of drummer. That doesn’t always lead to the top gigs. The struggles with reaching my goal of going on the radio full time is me not finishing college and having little radio experience. I’ve been told that my lack of experience is the only thing that is slowing me down from two different program directors. I am currently in talks with another program director and everything is going well so far. I feel like this one will be it for me.!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the most versatile creator you will ever meet. I’m able to give insight on the music business on my shows that some cant because I’ve lived and experienced it firsthand. I also have world-famous musicians and producers as friends who can also deliver a different perspective. When it comes to sports and wrestling, I am a student of the game. Everything I say on stream will be backed up by stats and video proof. I don’t say outlandish things for a rating pop. Dope Kontent is a one-stop shop for everything in music, sports, wrestling, and entertainment. Most people can’t cover multiple things like I do and give more facts than the “experts while still being entertaining.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I actually like to listen to other streamers who are similar to myself for motivation. I love watching J Tuck and Law Nation on YouTube. I love watching PushPlaytheDJ on twitch. These are regular guys like me who have built a huge following for their brands. Those are the type of people who keep me going outside of my kids and my lady.
