Rising Stars: Meet Kiara Simmons of Desoto tx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara Simmons

Hi Kiara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After i graduated high school and had my daughter (in 2020). I knew i needed a career that I could succeed in and make good money from while still being able to be in my daughters life when she needs it most and I knew working for someone else wasn’t going to work out because in case of emergencies or if she needed me I may not be able to be there because some jobs don’t care about what you have going on they just want you to work. So i decided to go through my talents to see what I could do and I chose to do hair and take it more seriously. So I looked into hair schools and ended up going to ogle school in Dallas, tx (June 2020). After I graduated hair school January 2021,I started doing hair in my grandma’s kitchen using my family and friends to practice and also get my work out there on social media to build clientele. At the time too I was also working a 9-5 to support my business, my daughter and myself’s needs. After 4 months i got my first real client. Then 3 months after that i was able to get my first apartment. I made one of the rooms my hair room and gave it a complete makeover to look like a salon. After that I started posting my room and continued posting me doing my family and friends hair. I also got a booking site using StyleSeat. Once I did that I started getting a lot more clients and getting more busy. After a while I was so busy I ended up having to quit my 9-5 in November 2021 so I can go harder in my business. Then in January 2022 I got my first suite and started doing more service for my clients. From there I kept growing and scaling my my business. I now have a bigger suite, I sell bundles and wigs, I provide my clients with luxury and stress free services that include shampoo, blow dry and hair if need for the appointment. I am a versatile stylist so i offer a little bit of everything from braids, wigs, weaves, and even men braids.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to success is never easy. For me as I was going through my journey I had a lot I was juggling. When i started I was a new mom, going to school and had a 9-5 to support my little family and my business. Being a mom and an entrepreneur is not for the weak. As a new mom I was faced with new challenge and had to adapt. I learned that it wasn’t just about what I needed to do for myself, it’s about what I needed to do for my daughter too. Then with entrepreneurship I had learn to stay consistent and motivated through the ups and downs of business and trust the process.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a versatile hairstylist, i started my business offering almost every style but i mainly did braids as my specialty at the time. As I grew i wanted to take a break from braids because of how time consuming they are so I cut out the small and extra small braids. Now i am growing more into wigs and have become a specialist in wigs. I am most proud of me and my growth. I am also proud of my ability to adapt to changes throughout my business. What sets me apart from other stylists is the way I care for my clients hair. The health and growth of my clients hair is very important to me. I provide my clients with hair care tips to grow and make their hair more healthy. So the more they come they’ll see the changes in their hair that they need and are happy with their hair outside of me just doing their desired style.

What are your plans for the future?
What I’m looking forward to in the future is to eventually own a salon that something of a one stop shop. Once Ive gotten there I still want to keep scaling and growing. I want to start different investments and have some investment properties to grow more streams of income so I’m not behind the chair forever.
