Rising Stars: Meet Madeline Potter of Dallas-Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline Potter.

Hi Madeline, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been taking photos since I was in pre-K. I would line my stuffed animals up in rows and practice school group photos on them with a disposable camera. I went through so many of those cameras in my childhood! I got my first point and shoot at 13 and it was a big deal. As a teen, I’d make my sister and friends dress up and do styled sessions – I was totally inspired by the teen vogue editorials and America’s Next Top Model. In college, I majored in visual arts with a focus in photography so at the time I created a facebook page called Madeline Faye Photography and started posting photos of anything and everything on there. People started booking me for shoots. My business transformed over time from just a hobby to a real photography business!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No! Turning a passion and hobby to a business forces change and growth. I had to learn how to go from what I creatively wanted in my own personal projects on shoots to shooting FOR my clients – basically, I had to learn that a business is run for the client and they are the focus. I had to become so much better at directing and posing and lighting, too, which takes practice. I also had to learn how to run a business. You can’t just post on a facebook page and hope people come to you. I have coaches and have taken business courses and now run multiple marketing techniques and have learned so many business skills that are not required if photography is just a hobby. I went from wondering how I’d make a living in the beginning to running a business I’m very proud of.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a portrait photographer, which includes graduating seniors, personal branding and headshots for corporations, family and pets, etc. I’m different from most photographers because I highly personalize my photoshoots for my clients’ visions and needs. I do in-home vision and wardrobe consultations so I can sit down with you and figure out exactly how your dream shoot can come to life and even what you’re going to wear. We also include hair and makeup and let you hand select your favorite images. I’m not the random photographer who never calls you, just shows up to a randomly selected location, and then sends you un-retouched photos that you may or may not like. My process is designed to be so seamless, fun, and personalized that you’ll love the way you look and feel – and my team and I are with you every step of the way. It’s truly unique and I love love love making my clients feel so happy and seen. I do feel like I can really channel each person’s authenticity and make anyone that says they aren’t photogenic love more photos of themselves than they’ve ever had before. It’s a gift and I love uplifting others with it.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
For anyone interested in a shoot, I will always hop on a call and take time to listen to what you’re thinking first. I ask important questions and then give you all the booking info. I want to make sure we have an initial conversation and are on the same page before we get started – I really value transparency and give every inquiry the time it deserves!
