Today we’d like to introduce you to Malcolm Jackson.
Hi Malcolm, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Like many, started playing in band in middle school, bright-eyed and excited to play the instrument that I now fully enjoy. During my secondary and collegiate school years, I’ve been introduced and inspired by my fellow peers, musicians, and artists that solidified my passion to become the musician that I currently am.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. In my high school years, deciding what type of artist and musician I wanted to be was challenging, as I have delved into many positions as a musician, from playing, composing, arranging, and starting in production, learning and exploring how each aspect is different. But once I’ve understood that each aspect can be intertwined together, I knew that I can do all that I wanted as a musician and that would lead me into a position that would be uniquely my own.
And of course, the ongoing challenge of continuing to develop as a musician and artist, from foundation and technique, musicality and professionalism, and the major challenge, the business of music and artistry.
While there are still some struggles that I have, but with really dope family, friends, mentors, artists, and supporters, it keeps the road manageable, and I am grateful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a percussionist, composer, producer, and educator. While there are many things that do creatively, my primary focus is contemporary percussion and performing on marimba and vibraphone. Some may know of me for the contemporary side of music, but there are others who found out about me from collaborating with the recording artist, Substantial.
I’m currently most proud of my recent album, ‘Interchange.’ It’s a reflection of my life that I’ve lived so far, the joys I’ve experienced and seeing where this journey of life will take me next.
What set me apart from others? Production wise, I think being able to curate a sound that involves my love of percussion in it’s authenticity to a space where it is not readily and sonically available for many and to be able to collaborate with many artists using my instrument. Performance wise, to compose and present new works and arrangements has been really well received from supporters and audience.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For anyone starting out, here are some things to consider and be cognizant of as an artist of any medium: be authentic to what you are doing, that is your core; be open-minded to different experiences and outlooks, it could help build your self and your craft; learn and continue to learn as much as you can about your artistry; and most importantly, enjoy what you are doing, you chose this path for a reason.
