Rising Stars: Meet Mari Cait of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mari Cait.

Hi Mari Cait, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2002, my mom was watching The Shining on her little tube tv. I must’ve been reading a book next to her, but got very caught up in the story on her screen. I was forever changed because of Horror.

The Haunt Spot itself would not exist if it weren’t for Cinemeal, our sister company. Our group of friends host several long form shows: Terrorpy (the mental health and spirituality of the Horror genre) and Cinemeal (our movie review show). We bonded quickly through our love of cinema and background in filmmaking.

Having grown up in DFW, I spent a lot of my teenage years exploring the community. I remember walking into Horror Freak at 15 and thinking I was in a dream. I had never been in anything like it. The Haunt Spot started as a simple idea to make Instagram Reels for “hidden gem” businesses that I thought were cool and not getting as much mainstream attention. Naturally, our love of Horror took over and has become a main focal point in what we do.

We’re a very young company, only a year old! Ever since I had this idea, we’ve been so fortunate to meet the coolest people ever, start the Cinemeal Zine (our free community resource), and attend events across the country!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely had its twists and turns. We all work day jobs while running both Cinemeal and The Haunt Spot. Finding time and resources has not always been easy, but I like to think we get crafty with what we have.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Haunt Spot is a media platform that highlights spaces that aren’t always reflected in the mainstream. We have a team of 5 close friends sharing their love of cinema!

I’m most proud of how true we stay to our overall goal: getting creative and giving back to our community.

What does success mean to you?
Success is a mindset. It’s in the eye of the beholder. Are you happy? Fulfilled? If you reached your goal, where are you off to next?
