Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Covington.
Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As long as I can remember, I have wanted a career in the creative field. After graduating from Louisiana State University in 2018, I moved to Dallas to start my career as a graphic designer working at an agency and then transitioning to a job in fashion. As much as I enjoyed working in these industries, I knew that I wanted to build and own something that I could be proud of. After losing my job due to Covid-19 in 2020, I decided to take the plunge and officially launch my own design and art direction business. I now help build and grow brands and it has been such a meaningful and rewarding experience for me. In 2019, a friend came to me with the idea of starting a clothing brand. Over the course of the next year myself and my two business partners, Shanna and Ari, co-founded Borne Collection, a women-owned fashion and lifestyle brand focused on providing comfortable and functional clothing for the modern woman while promoting wellness, body-positivity and inclusion. Since our launch in October 2020, we have seen so much support behind the brand and we’re excited to continue building a platform that supports women mind, body and spirit.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not! As any business owner can tell you, launching a brand or company always comes with unexpected challenges. With Borne especially, navigating a brand launch with many Covid-19 restrictions required us to get creative as we had no idea what we were doing or how to even get started. Our first photoshoot was literally just us with a camera and the clothing and now we are launching large brand activations. Ultimately we learn and grow so much from these experiences and at the end of the day as long as you are presenting yourself and your brand as authentically as you can the rest will fall into place.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in art direction and helping brands grow their business through thoughtful design. What sets me apart is the dedication that I have for my clients. I am passionate about crafting beautiful visual brand experiences between my clients and their customers and I’m proud to have a part of their growth. I have met so many incredible, talented women in this business and they inspire me every day to continue moving forward.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I absolutely think that the future is female. We will definitely continue to see the growth of strong women entrepreneurs and I’m so grateful to be a part of that community.
