Rising Stars: Meet Michael Goude of HairStory Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Goude.

Michael Goude

Michael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been in the industry for 15 years. I was doing construction work in my early 20s and trying to “make it” in the music industry. At the time, my hairstylist, who had been in the industry for a while, saw something in me and asked if I’d be interested in going to school and coming to work for him. I jumped at the opportunity, knowing I’d love being a hairdresser. I used to do haircuts for my friends when I was a teenager, and my mom was a beauty school dropout so that meant lots of different hairstyles growing up! Also, I’ve always felt a call to service; I love connecting with people of all walks of life, I like the idea of having a career that I could do anywhere in the world, and I like the idea of having freedom over myself expression and my schedule. For the last 15 years, I’ve pursued music and hair in Texas, Arizona, Denver, and then back to Texas. In 2019, I decided to focus exclusively on hairdressing, and I became the creative director or hair revival studio in Dallas until joining the HairStory Dallas team in April 2022

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Haha it definitely has not been a smooth road. I still face many struggles on the path, and I’ve accepted the fact there’s not one destination. It’s all constantly evolving; there are lessons in every struggle. The biggest struggle being self-doubt when you’re building something bigger than yourself, you gotta let go of the parts of yourself that are playing small. I find that the inter-critic is the biggest obstacle in most creatives’ paths. If you can make peace with that and realize your worth isn’t attached to what you do, you’ll be free to create. And real talk the actual Business side of things. As an artist, it’s my nature to create, but the organization it takes to sustain a business is a learned skill for me and one that I’m still learning. These days, hairdressers are photographers, videographers, custom service reps, marketing directors, therapist, it’s a lot to keep up with.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a hairdresser. I specialize in haircutting. I create cool effortless hair for the active human through intuitive haircuts and personalized consultations. For many years I was a color specialist known for creating lived in blondes. Over the last 4 years, I’ve felt drawn back to my first love of cutting, and I’ve been rebuilding and rebranding. I’ve been fortunate enough to work around some of the best haircutters in the industry that I’ve learned a lot from them! This shift has provided some fresh inspiration, and I’m having a lot of fun with it. There’s really nothing that makes me more proud than when a client loves their haircut, and they leave with a boost of energy and they’re feeling powerful and beautiful. I’ve seen people leave my chair and get promotions at work, get engaged, leave a toxic relationship or career. I’m not saying it was all the haircut, but I truly believe when you sit in my chair, we shift energy. I don’t see myself as “set apart” from others. We’re the same. There’s nothing special that I have that someone else doesn’t have. But when you sit in my chair, you can expect a haircut with lots of love and attention to detail as well has finding a calm space to breath and find a moment of peace.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
