Rising Stars: Meet Michael Kolawole

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Kolawole.

Hi Michael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Thank You for having me! I came up with the idea of ‘Pray Before I Eat’ during my sophomore year of high school. Being the youngest in my household of four older siblings, my mother always instilled into us the importance of being persistent in prayer and giving God the glory before and after anything that we would encounter!

Once she explained it to me thoroughly, I implemented into my everyday living. Before basketball games, before tests, and even before meals. This was a way of life for my family and I. Though most athletes use their brand to depict an image to their supporters or fans that represent them, I wanted to do this a bit differently. I try my best to represent God throughout my platform; basketball. Basketball is my passion and it’s what I’ve loved for as long as I could remember. So I thought, what better way to have a brand that I can show my gratitude for people and for God! That is a brief description on how and why ‘Pray Before I Eat’ was created.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
To say the least, it’s been even balanced! Yeah, there are some tough days. But during those times, I remember why I’m doing what I’m doing. That tends to keep people going and motivated most of the time. It was and is a full going process that I am still getting acclimated to. But once you have a vision, and you match it with the work you put in, that road begins to smoothen out.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a 23-year-old Professional Basketball Player. In my first year, I played in Asia, specifically, Surabaya Indonesia. I am looking to go back overseas for my second year, but due to COVID-19 things are on a bit of a hold in most countries. I graduated with my Bachelors Degree in Educational Studies at Lamar University in the Fall of 2019. When I’m not working out, a lot of my time goes to studying the entrepreneurial world and ways I can become a better businessman. I am currently in the process of cultivating my brand and turning it into a Nonprofit Organization. In this nonprofit, I plan to give back to homeless shelters as well as foundations in need. I also want to build camaraderie within our youth because I feel as though they are our future.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising about myself I feel like would be that I’m not an “In crowd” person. I kinda just enjoy spending time with the people in my inner circle as well as traveling and building experiences.
