Rising Stars: Meet Michaela Nelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela Nelson.

Hi Michaela, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My story begins with how I got to Dallas. After college, I was offered a position as a digital sales representative for a Fortune 500 company in the technology Industry. They gave me two location options Boston or Dallas, Dallas was a no-brainer, I could not survive Boston winters. I took a leap of faith and moved to Dallas not knowing very many people at all. I quickly learned that the technology industry is not the place for me, I did not feel connected to what I was selling and it showed in my numbers. I’ve always had a love for people and homes and although I was not satisfied with my career in tech it gave me the opportunity to pursue a license in real estate. Fast forward a year later my company went through a huge re-org and I was let go. I had no idea that this would be in the cards for me but I was so glad that I already completed my classes and was fully licensed. This was my chance to pursue my passion. Right after the let-go, I took the sales skills I learned and jumped straight into real estate, closing on my first home shortly after. I like to believe that everything happens for a reason and I strongly believe that God knew I needed a push and losing my first corporate job was definitely a BIG push. A few months later, I landed a job as a leasing consultant which would ironically propel my career as a full-time REALTOR®. In this role, I not only met and joined my new brokerage, Money Move Locating, but I also grew in my knowledge of apartments, which has helped me to lease numerous clients as an apartment locator.

Again, it was time to take another leap of faith and pursue real estate full time so, I left leasing to fully focus on building my real estate business. Today, I am working full-time with both apartment and residential clients. This summer we launched our residential brand, The David Ivy Group, and I was named among the Top Producers for our team.

My journey has been filled with lots of twists and turns but I can confidently say that I am exactly where I am supposed to be. I am so blessed to be in the position that I am in today, real estate is so much more than selling homes. I’m in the business of people first and creating lasting connections while providing top-tier service is what drives me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh how I wish the road was smooth. Real estate is a rewarding career but it’s not for the easily discouraged, it’s a true hustle. About 90% of real estate professionals fail in their first year and sadly I almost fell victim to this statistic. Due to fear, I did not close a single transaction in year one, luckily, I was not full-time yet but it was eye-opening. It’s one of those things where you don’t know what you don’t know, no matter how many classes you take (trust me, I took a lot). You really learn by doing and keeping a strong experienced team around you. You can’t be lackadaisical or scared when it comes to real estate. I had to overcome my fear of failure and put myself out there. The only way to get clients is if people know what you do. Now that I am full time the stakes are higher but so is the reward. I have to show up daily for myself and for my clients and the results that I have seen from this mindset shift are amazing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Realtor with the David Ivy Group and Money Move Locating. I specialize in luxury apartments and residential buyers. I am proud of my most recent closing. I was able to help my clients close under-asking despite the recent “buyer frenzy”. Not only were we able to close under-asking but their home was appraised $100k over the sold price. What sets me apart from others is my faith, my patience, and understanding, my determination to win, and my deep desire for excellence. The word excellent is a staple in my business, it reminds me to go above and beyond in the most unique way possible in every aspect.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people do not know that I am actually fairly shy when it comes to meeting people one on one. People that know me well or have seen me in a comfortable environment would say that I am super outgoing, bubbly, and vibrant which are all true. But what people do not see are the breathing exercises, calls to my mom, and prayer before the networking events. It’s funny because it is so ironic for my line of work but it’s something that I work through daily.
