Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicol Fuller.
Hi Nicol, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been folding origami for several years as a hobby. I am a fidgeter, and origami was a way I could create something with that energy. I folded origami to create artwork for my kids’ rooms. I also co-founded Lovepacs Denton, a non-profit that feeds Denton ISD students during holiday breaks from school. I like to fold origami hearts with kids at fundraising events for Lovepacs. Three years ago, I folded 1,000 cranes and hung them at the Lovepacs pantry I occasionally hold classes there that benefit Lovepacs. I also create origami wall murals that I put up at my kids’ school, which is also one of the schools Lovepacs serves. I started getting requests to fold things for friends so I decided to start an origami business. Denton is an amazing, close-knit community, and they hold a community market where only local vendors can participate. I enjoy selling my origami online and at markets around Denton. I have some items for sale at a few local stores and get orders from all over the world. I am currently looking into other shops and markets all over the DFW area to sell my creations. I love visual art that makes people feel like a kid again. I love making people smile. During the pandemic, many people were not allowed to visit their relatives in assisted living. I had orders of flowers that were sent to their loved ones, and I was thrilled to hear how much they enjoyed the flowers.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Folding origami takes a lot of time and patience. The paper can get pricey along with the other materials. I think people see paper flowers and don’t want to spend the money they would spend on flowers from a florist, which is frustrating because origami flowers last forever. So, my biggest challenge is finding the right price point and still making it worth my time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I really enjoy creating origami flower bouquets and plants, and that’s probably what I am known for. As much as I love making flowers, I love making origami murals at my kids’ school more. Each mural has a different theme, and the kids walking by are excited to see what I’m going to do and also sad when I have to take it down. I always enjoy coming up with a theme, and it usually takes a few months of folding and planning to complete the mural. I don’t really know many people locally that fold, so I enjoy sharing my art and hopefully inspire others to try origami.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I was born and raised in the Dallas area and lived all over the metroplex. I love my current town, Denton, the most because it has a small town feel and lots to do for young families. The only problem with the Dallas area is it’s such a big area to navigate.
