Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Grimes.
Hi Nicole, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I learned to crochet from my grandmother when I was a teenager. I would make small things like washcloths. I stopped crocheting for several years. Fast forward to about two years ago. My husband, our son, and I moved to the Dallas area to be closer to my mom. That move made it to where I stay home with our toddler. My mom handed me a bag of yarn and crochet hooks, about a year ago, to give me an outlet to unwind at night. I started making ear warmers and small keychains for my friends and family. Then I started making bigger plushies. I found what I love through that. I found that I love vending at local markets and meeting new people.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road for me. Opening any small business is difficult for anyone. Not only did I open a business, but I did so after moving to a new state. I have had to learn where the best places are to be a vendor, and where to not be a vendor. I have to drive my own traffic to my website and social media pages. I’m slowly growing and getting to where I want to be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a crochet artist. I make amigurumi (known as plushies) and I absolutely love it. I’m known for the chunky mushroom guys I made at my markets last year. What sets me apart from others is my passion for this art form. I love seeing the joy on others’ face when they pick one of my plushies. I also try to make sure all of my plushies are made with utmost care. I handmake them and like to focus on details.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is going to discovery cove and swimming with the dolphins for my 18th birthday. My parents did everything to make sure my brother and I had as many fun experiences as possible. My dream in high school was to be a marine biologist. So, they saved up enough money to take us to discovery cove and I got to swim with the dolphins. It was such an amazing experience.
