Today we’d like to introduce you to Nija Higgins.
Hi Nija, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In the wake of a tragic murder-suicide within my own family, I entered the funeral home industry and witnessed firsthand the unpreparedness and emotional turmoil that can accompany such events. Recognizing the profound impact of domestic violence and mental illness, I became driven to shed light on the often-overlooked struggles of survivors, particularly children. Through my own experiences, I discovered the vital importance of thoughtful planning during times of grief. As I navigated the lonely path of handling every aspect, from private grave digging to counseling, I realized the need for greater awareness. My journey has become a commitment to raising awareness about the consequences of domestic violence and the significance of proactive planning in the face of loss. Embarking on a career rooted in education, I have accumulated over 24 years of experience and earned licenses as both a Principal and Superintendent. My overarching objective is to seamlessly integrate education with the death care industry. Specifically, I aim to provide support to marginalized communities by enhancing their comprehension of burial policies. My mission involves crafting comprehensive plans to alleviate the emotional and financial burdens that families often face when preparing their loved ones for their final disposition. This fusion of education and death care endeavors to empower and uplift communities during challenging times.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In a predominantly male industry, I am breaking barriers and navigating challenges as the first black female in Grand Prairie to venture into funeral services. Embracing my unique path, I’ve become one of the few black females to own a funeral home. I’ve forged my own mold, allowing creativity to flow freely in my approach. This journey is not just about overcoming obstacles but reshaping the landscape and inspiring others to pursue their passions beyond societal norms.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Our commitment to providing affordable funeral packages, along with discounts for specific groups like veterans, victims of domestic violence, Native Americans, Educators, and first responders, are the fabric of Higgins House of Rest. Additionally, offering free professional services for children reflects a deep dedication to supporting families during challenging times. Our mission not only addresses financial considerations but also extends a helping hand to those who have served their country, faced adversity, or experienced loss. In addition, we offer an artistic flair that includes backdrops, decor, and elegance.
At Higgins House of Rest, attentive listening is at the core of our service. We take the time to understand and honor each unique life story, crafting personalized obituaries that capture the essence of those we commemorate. Our commitment extends to providing individualized services, embracing the diverse and personal preferences of each family we serve. We believe each story matters, and we are here to ensure it is told with the utmost care and respect.
We will use distinctive decor. These elements not only set our services apart but also reflect a thoughtful and creative approach to celebrating the lives of those we serve. Our commitment to making each funeral a truly memorable and special occasion shines through these distinctive details.
In addition, we build a personal relationship with the families that includes making house calls, getting to know the decedent personally through the families. This helps us create a memorial table that reflects the individual. Often, funeral homes forget the importance of aftercare. Therefore, we provide resources and support after the funeral rite. This could include widow support (lawn care, dinner, etc.). Resources and referrals.
One memory that resonates, Higgins House of Rest, allowed the family to have the “last ride.” We drove the decedent to their home for the last time in the hearse. As we drove by the home, the family released balloons.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We are available 24/7.
We provide burial insurance policies that are affordable. Our policies include a guaranteed funding, meaning if you could no longer afford the policy, you would not lose your money. Your family would have access to the funds that were paid toward their burial expense(s).
“We celebrate every story and honor every life.”
