Rising Stars: Meet Pamela & Dylan Dowdy of Dallas-Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela & Dylan Dowdy.

Hi Pamela & Dylan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
If you’re ever in East Dallas, come find our artisan gift shop, Dowdy Studio. We describe it as a thrilling fever dream filled with hand-drawn cats, goofy cowboys, yetis, space dinosaurs, spooky fun, mermaids, raccoons, rampaging opossums, and all kinds of local Texas nonsense. You’ll find our weird imagination splattered across hand-printed tees, home goods, bags, hats, framed art, must-have accessories, and anything else we find interesting or cute.

We’re Dylan and Pamela, the owners, artists, and two people who are never too far from a scrap of paper, ready to scribble down some random, silly idea. Dowdy Studio actually started on a date night with a couple of pencils, a sketchbook, and a spark. We started this adventure in 2008 and have been passionately creating ever since.

Where we are today hasn’t exactly been a straight line. We started out printing tees and making art on a dining room table (sorry, roommates), then graduated into the garage of our first home where we crammed in as many event displays and art-making space as possible . From there, we landed in a small warehouse behind Goodfriend, where we experimented, took on clients, threw parties, and housed our mobile store, the Dowdy Studio Wagon.

Eventually, we opened our brick-and-mortar shop just across the street. And that’s where we are today. Still throwing all our weird creativity and silly fun into Dowdy Studio and sharing it with cool folks!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We wouldn’t say it’s been exactly smooth. There have definitely been bumps, mistakes, detours, and some excruciatingly surprising potholes.

Running a small business has it all! Ever since the beginning, we’ve been figuring it out as we go. But we’ve always kept our foot on the gas, staying true to ourselves and making genuinely creative apparel and goods that people love enough to want to incorporate into their style.

Anytime we feel lost or a little off our path, we take a minute to reflect on why we’re doing this. Maybe we don’t need to expand so quickly. Maybe we don’t need to jump through every unnecessary hoop just to get a little further ahead.

At the end of the day, we’d rather keep making cool stuff, make people smile, and build something that feels true to Dowdy.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So basically, we draw, we print, we laugh, and we make our ideas come to life. We’ve been doing it officially for nearly 2 decades. That’s a late stage teenager, if you’re counting.

We like to think we are known best for our hand-illustrated and printed, ridiculously comfy tees, but Dowdy Studio has taken a lot of shapes over the years. We make our own apparel and goods, work with clients on custom projects, and run a gift shop full of things we think are too fun not to exist.

And then there’s the famous Dowdy Studio Wagon.
For years, the Wagon was our traveling storefront, rolling around town and beyond, bringing our art directly to people at events, restaurants and even across the US to big arts and music festivals. A surprising number of people still remember us from those days, which makes us feel all warm, fuzzy and nostalgic.

These days we studio out of a brick-and-mortar shop, but the idea hasn’t changed much. We’re still two artists making things we love and happy to share our creations with all the cool fun folks out there, like you!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
People. Hands down.

We love making things, but we really love the people we’ve meet along the way. Sharing our artwork through Dowdy Studio has granted us an opportunity to connect and talk with so many cool folks with cool stories. It’s an inspiration to keep making even more art.

We also obsess over the little details in our art and in our products. It matters because we believe we should not only want to sell our tees, but we should also crave to wear it daily. And we do! Anything we make should feel good, look good, last a long time and make your mind sparkle.
