Today we’d like to introduce you to Pearce Dunlap.
Hi Pearce, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.
My lifelong passion for creativity, learning, and new hobbies has consistently driven me. I am almost always engaged in some form of making, but glass, in particular, has captivated me. I adore the medium and the challenge of crafting unexpected pieces with it. I learned how to make stained glass when I had an idea for a lamp I wanted to make, after that the flood gates opened. I am self taught through reading old books and online help, learning from local shops, and just experimenting with the limits of glass. I have also met other talented stained glass artists who have taught me a few things. One of the main reasons we wanted to start a studio was to be able to teach classes. I love to teach, and when people want to learn, you can have a lot of fun.
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When you’re in the business of breaking glass, a few things are going to break. I’ve lost a few projects due to gravity, and it’s always hard after how much goes into each piece. But things happen, and you go onto the next project and use it as a learning experience in how to fix it. Running a small business in general is hard. When you have to wear all the hats, it can be a real challenge to get everything right the first time.
We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m a stained glass artist, creating 2D and 3D pieces out of glass. I love the medium, but was never into the traditional style/patterns. I create much more modern pieces, something I would hang in my own house. We have been teaching intro classes to stained glass at the current studio for almost 3 years now, and I am very happy with the community that is building up around the studio. We offer the opportunity to learn something new, and sometimes it’s just a fun outing, but the feedback we receive and the repeat students we have speak volumes. I am working to create a space where people can come practice their craft, or work on their own projects, while having someone available that can answer questions or collaborate with. We host art parties that showcase local artists, but more casual and newbie friendly than traditional “art shows.”
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Don’t be afraid to speak with other creative people. We shouldn’t be gatekeeping skills. I visit all the local glass shops and have created great connections with them. I’m not afraid to ask questions, and so far I have been met with nothing but support and knowledge from shop owners and other artists. Whatever field you’re in, find that creative community and just ask questions. From my experience, good people want to help and share their knowledge.
