Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxi Taylor.
Roxi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started doing hair and makeup backstage in college for theater productions and realized it was something that I loved to do and was decent at it without much training. I decided I didn’t like college, except for the theater classes, dropped out, and started at Paul Mitchell the School Dallas. I learned so much and immediately started at a high-end hair extension salon in Dallas right after graduation. I worked there for a few years before moving out of state to a yoga retreat center. I studied yoga and meditation while doing some hair there too! Eventually, I moved back to Texas where I moved around salons trying to pick up skills I didn’t have before; fashion colors and men’s haircuts for example. Now I’m at Salon Olines in the Bishop Arts District. I work for myself, create my schedule, work on a variety of types of hair and styling, and still do a bit of theater!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a hairstylist, it has always been expected for me to do your hair. In this new age of technology, it is no longer the only thing expected of a successful hairdresser. I now have to be a photographer, videographer, and social media expert. I am still in the learning process for all these and to top it off the pandemic shut down the world right as I started at a new salon. It made it hard for clients to come in as well, due to the lack of funds. It’s all a challenge to be sure but nothing I can’t overcome and learn!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in hair extensions (tape, microbeads, micro beaded wefts, fusion, clip-in, top pieces); fashion/fantasy colors, highlights/balayage, and haircuts. What sets me apart is I am able to listen to clients and take their ideas and come up with a plan that will give them what they want without compromising their hair integrity. I pride myself into delivering the hair length the client expects. You can always cut off more but to put it back costs more money! The client’s voice is important to me. I love people and talking with them about hair and life!
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve had lots of people support me the years. All of my employers have encouraged me and taught me so much. My parents helped me through cosmetology school. My sisters started coming to me during cosmetology school and even now they let me experiment and play with their hair. The theater community has also supported me, hiring me to design shows and come to me for style advice.
