Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharmaine Hunter
Hi Sharmaine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m Sharmaine Hunter, a single mother from Lafayette, Louisiana. For about six years, I worked as a full-time VIP waitress, a job that provided the flexibility to be with my daughter during the day and earn a substantial income at night. However, the demanding schedule began to take a toll on my energy, leaving me unable to be as active and present for my daughter as I wanted. Feeling like I was neglecting my child, I realized I needed a new plan to create a secure, emotionally fulfilling, and financially stable life for both of us.
In 2019, I enrolled in real estate school. Though I was nervous about the exam, I took the plunge—and failed. This initial defeat left me feeling discouraged, and I put my real estate dreams aside. Then the pandemic hit, giving me time to refocus and study. On my third attempt, I passed the exam, and the sense of accomplishment was immense. It was a powerful lesson in perseverance and the importance of not giving up.
I began my career as a licensed real estate agent in 2020, and it was transformative. In my first year, I closed on four new construction homes—a rare feat for a new agent. While still working as a VIP waitress for extra income, I grew increasingly weary of that environment and knew I had to fully commit to real estate to achieve my goals. After making some personal and professional changes, including switching brokers, I still felt there was more for me to achieve.
Taking a leap of faith, I moved to Dallas and joined Keller Williams Dallas Midtown, where everything fell into place. I began selling million-dollar homes and working closely with my partner, a builder who mentored me as a project manager overseeing construction projects. This role brought back memories of visiting work sites with my late father, who was also in construction. I feel his presence guiding me, as my guardian angel, in every step I take.
Relocating to Dallas has been life-changing both personally and professionally. As a Black woman thriving in a male-dominated industry, I not only earn a great living but genuinely enjoy every aspect of real estate. Now in my fourth year as a licensed agent, my next goal is to become a broker and mentor other agents. Believing in oneself is crucial, but surpassing your own expectations and living your dreams is truly rewarding. I aim to inspire others by showing that turning pain into passion is possible. My journey is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of dreams.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a single mother, I faced many challenges. Becoming a single mother was never in my plans, but I accepted my journey and pushed through. When I moved to Texas in 2016, I had no family close by, which made things very difficult at times. Often, my family didn’t know what I was going through—not because they didn’t care, but because I didn’t want to worry them.
The hardships I faced allowed me to realize I wanted more for my daughter and me. These challenges molded me into the woman and mother I am today, driving me to create a better life for us. My experiences taught me resilience, strength, and the importance of striving for a brighter future.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
