Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Kay.
Shawn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began with a lot of uncertainty until the path was discovered that I was meant to be a Showman. I was raised with various expectations from my family, especially when it came to gaining a formal education and finding a stable career. After graduating from Columbia College Chicago in May 2011, I worked in different sales/marketing roles for about 5 years, but since I was 18, I worked as an entertainer on the side and it grew as the years went by. In 2014, I made the decision to go into business for myself and started my company DoItAll Entertainment with my two business partners. Since then, I have traveled to 22 cities in North America (including Mexico and Canada). Then after moving to Dallas, TX from Chicago at the end of 2020, I started DIA Media Solutions to help provide media content creation and logistics for businesses and brands, after years of making content for myself and with others.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth journey lol Especially being South Indian, having a career as a Showman was something I had to pioneer. With the lack of representation of my culture in the industry, to this day, even with my continuing work and personal success, I am sometimes not taken seriously. As well, not having the same financial abundance as most South Indians, proved its challenges and judgment. Taking the leap to go into business for yourself is something that takes a lot of courage and perseverance but I have found great pride and happiness in the efforts I’ve made for the career I was meant for.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a Showman, I not only understand the logistics and business of creating a live event or media production but instill the skill sets of a creative artist with a multi-faceted talent spectrum. I’m a professional MC, Singer/songwriter, Comedian, DJ, and content creator. I think having such a spectrum of talents has really set me apart from many within the entertainment/media industry. I am capable to produce so many different types of shows, and I gained a fairly prestigious reputation for creating shows that people haven’t seen before, which brings me great pride. I am the Showman that can do it all 😉
What do you think about happiness?
I think my happiness comes from living by my personal truth. I don’t compromise what or who I give my energy and time. Once I stopped lying to myself, I felt like the whole world made sense. No matter what, life is going to be difficult, and the more you gain, the bigger your problems can get. Understanding what I control allows me to direct more positive energy forward. I really feel like you get back what you put into the world. So even when it seems everything is going wrong, the more positivity I put forward, it tends to breed more positive situations. I try my best to see the positivity in almost every situation and be positive for all I encounter. I found my true happiness comes from bringing joy to others because it reminds me that I was put on this earth to bring happiness to others.
