Rising Stars: Meet Silvia Banocy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Silvia Banocy.

Hi Silvia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Our story starts by the fact that we love a good cup of coffee. Being from Guatemala gave me the opportunity to get and appreciate amazing coffee. My husband decided to buy green coffee beans and roast our own. Always looking for freshness and good quality. We were roasting our coffee with a tiny roaster for over six years.

Over time, we decided to turn our hobby into a small business. Everyone who tasted our coffee would ask us if we could sell them some. We saved up enough money to buy a medium sized roaster. We were very excited about our new plans. I made the decision to take classes to learn about the science of roasting. I travelled home to Guatemala in 2019 and attended coffee roasting classes at the Guatemalan National Association of Coffee (ANACAFE).

While attending classes, I got in contact with small coffee producers who were willing to work with me. One of the farms I purchase coffee from is run by 23 women! A great accomplishment in a very male dominated industry.

Upon my return, we ordered our new roaster, and it arrived in March of 2020. Sadly, COVID hit within days from receiving it. We worked very hard spreading the news about our new endeavor.. We could not do face to face business so we started selling on line. So far we have established a nice customer base despite the obstacles we all have faced.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth ride, COVID changed our game plan. Nonetheless, when you have a passion for something, you find a way to persevere.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We order green coffee beans. Arrange the logistics, custom roast and ship or deliver to our customers. Every single order is Roasted upon receipt. We do not keep roasted coffee in stock. We strictly roast to order. We have built a profile for each and every customer. This allows us to be consistent every time.

We specialize in Guatemalan coffee. Each coffee has a story and we know exactly where is coming from. We can stand by the quality as We know the process from harvesting until it arrives to us.

Guatemala has 8 different coffee regions and they all have their own characteristics. Each based on location, altitud, soil and surrounding vegetation.

What does success mean to you?
Success is all about happy customers.❤️
