Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonny, Eddie Rubalcaba, and Brenda Palacios.

Sonn, Eddie Rubalcaba, Brenda Palacios

Sonny, Eddie, and Brenda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Sonny (Guitarist/Lead singer/composer) started loving music and played music in high school, but his journey later started when he had the desire to play the guitar, opening his world to the multi-instrumentalist mentality. Sonny would write/compose his own music, leading him to find the first rendition of this band known as Beautiful Losers, where he met Eddie (the drummer). Beautiful losers would go on to play a few shows around the DFW metroplex until eventually becoming Xochi. Eddie then called upon longtime friend and musician Brenda to be their bassist. Xochi strives to bring musical art to the people of Dallas while praising the Aztec God, Xochipilli. The band uses the God as an idol to represent what they stand for and the messages they want to speak upon. The band just wants to play music, share art, and build community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sonny: While music is my passion it’s hard to stay creative especially once you hit the quote on quote real world working a full time job, having to take care of family, taking care of a house and playing shows i feel myself hard to find time to be creative as i feel everyone does in modern life! so a lot of the time i do have these writing blocks and i do my best to create some of the most real music i can while dealing with the pressures of life going full force.

Eddie Rubalcaba: Growing up in a Mexican household, I was often told I need to become something great, like a teacher and or doctor. Something or someone better than what those who came before me had the chance to be. However, I chose the path of pursuing music, which oftentimes is considered a pathless dream. A myth. That idea/mentality takes its toll on me daily. I work hard to achieve my goals and dreams, yet I still feel the weight of the world on my shoulders. I want to make everyone proud while still maintaining myself, pave my own path, and show people that they can make of this life their own way.

Brenda Palacios: My struggles stem from growing up in a religious family. My grandparents heavily participated in the church, which resulted in my entire family being a part of it as well. I often felt alienated and like I was always under watchful eye. Loving the type of music I enjoy doesn’t help my case. From influences of my godfather, parents, and my aunt, rock/metal music is quintessential to my music career. From bands like Deftones, System of a Down, Limp Bizkit, etc., the church sees the genre as “devil music,” as my grandparents often call it. The church also speaks against values I hold dear to me, such as Women’s Rights, LGBTQIA Rights, and POC rights. As a young Mexican-American growing up in republican Texas, it’s very hard to speak up for myself, especially when it seems like the entire city knows your family and can/will say something. I always want to protect/and honor my family’s sacrifices. However, Rock music speaks for me, and I will use it as a medium to project my spirit. Being told that music will get me nowhere in life definitely empowers me to prove everyone wrong. Xochi will always welcome those who feel lost and unwanted.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
